Louisiana native Musical theatre hopeful!!..Any advice appreciated!

Hi, Im new to the forum but definetly not a stranger of the site. I'll be a junior in high school this upcoming year and over the past month or so I compiled a list of colleges that i have really been interested in. I really want to study mt!!! Over the past few years it has become more than a passion, but a lifestyle for me. Its all i can think about when i wake up or go to sleep. Now i know it may seem cliche' or "over-dramatic" but I can only say what I feel and what comes from my heart is what will more than likely come from my mouth! lol Anyways i am very active in my schools performing arts progam (i am a magnet student at the school for music and theatre training) and also local theatre companies. At school we do about 2-4 mainstage productions ranging in straight plays to musicals! I dont live in a huge city so oppurtunities are limited but the ones i do have i try to take them! The list of colleges that i'm sure i will apply to are:
Florida State University
BOCO
CCM
Elon University
I'd really like if any parents, current students. administrators, accepted students to these schools or ANYONE willing share their experiences with these schools as far as atmosphere, auditions, etc. I'll be visiting FSU at the end of july! Any advice that is given i will definetly appreciate it!! tHANKS! and go class of 2012! hAHA
-oo and if anyone in my class (2012) are mt hopefuls id really like to hear your opinions and just talk about how crazy we are for falling in love with this art form. lol

mvic, welcome to the forum! If you look at the top of the page you will see a listing of many of the schools you are interested in. Click on these and read, you may find answers to many of your questions and you can ask your questions there also. Of course you can always ask questions in the main area also. Good Luck!

Welcome! The most important thing you can do is really focus on technique training in voice and dance - both will be extremely important at all 4 schools currently on your list, and to many other schools, also. At this point, technique classes and lessons are more important than performances in shows, unless your vocal and/or dance technique are already really advanced or unless rehearsing that show will truly advance your individual technique. Both voice and dance require motor learning (aka muscle training), so the longer you immerse yourself in solid technique, the better! Acting is of course very EXTREMELY important too, and hopefully you are lucky enough to have great acting classes at your school.

Break a leg! It will be an incredible journey. :)

thank you!
yea i definetly know i need to be focusing more on my technique and i’ll be working on that as much as i can!

And keep in mind that these schools on your list are very selective, so be sure you do some research and also find some safety schools for your list. No school that requires an audition is a safety. This means you need to find a few NO AUDITION programs for which you are an academic match – and it’s important that you find a safety school that you would be happy to attend, not just one that would be a last resort.

agreeing with onstage…the only “safety” school is one that accepts 15 students and have only 15 audition! Even schools that may not be on your “big” list or are not that well known or established are still going to have 100-200 audition for those coveted 15 spots. So have a few non-audition schools researched because “it is a jungle out there”. And BE PREPARED!!! Working on your songs and monologues with a vocal/acting coach for a year is certainly not out of the ordinary. Good luck!

Good luck to you, and you have a good list to start. You may want to add Ouachita Baptist University which offers a BM in musical theatre, and last I knew only required audition for scholarship, not admission to program. It’s in Arkadelphia, AR (I don’t know where you are in LA). You will need a non-audition safety school.

Thanks ericsmom I looked up Ouachita Baptist University and will definetly add it to my list!
