Lousy SAT Score

I just received my scores back, and I was disappointed to find out I scored a 1340 (710 english, 630 math). 3 months ago I took a practice test with no prep and scored a 1360 (730 english, 630 math), and I’ve had tutoring since then, so I figured I would have improved at least to 1400 (Prior to this, I had improved just by retaking the test again and again, I started with a 1240).

So I’m pretty bummed out, and I’m definitely going to take it again in May (and try a different tutor/study approach). However I was wondering if this is common at all with first-time test takers? I was feeling pretty nervous and didn’t get a lot of sleep the night before, and I’ve heard about other peoples scores actually going down the first time they took the test. In short I’m wondering if this is a fluke/something semi-common, or should I be seriously concerned that after studying for months I didn’t improve at all…

I had a similar situation where I started out with 1280 on my first practice test and after about 6 months of tutoring took December SAT and got 1280 despite doing much better on previous practice tests. I took the test again in March when I felt calmer and more ready and raised my score by 120 points. I think that the first test can be very hard especially if you have not gotten too much sleep the night before. Try again in May and I bet you will improve
