I'm a rising senior from Indiana with a 3.86 CGPA for high school, honors and a 29 composite ACT (33E, 33R, 28S, 22M).

So that's all well and good, BUT I want to apply as a Computer Science major. This is problematic because I only scored a 22 on the math portion of my ACT. Will this affect my chance at admission?

I know Purdue is fairly well known for CompSci, but do I have an advantage because I'm an INDIANA RESIDENT?

I have good math grades in school (all A's) and will have programming experience through Business Professionals of America. What are my chances of admission with that darn ACT score?

Take it again or take the SAT ? 22 on M is quite below the 25th percentile. You will probably get in undecided. Just transfer later.

I plan on taking it again in September, just worried my scores won’t get in in time.

You are a little lucky as Purdue’s CS department is not part of the Engineering school, so you won’t need to be admitted to the Engineering school to get in the CS major. At most schools, getting into a major in the College of Science (or Arts & Sciences) is not as limited.

On top of that, Purdue’s Math department has a Math/CS hybrid major. That is also an option as a “back door way to major in CS”.

As long as you stick to software in the working world:

B.S. Math/CS = B.S. in CS

Plus the major requires a 2.0, so like mentioned earlier, you can transfer later.

Global- So you think I have a good chance because its not part of the School of Engineering?

Are you joking or what ? You will get your scores in October. Dude, you still have 5 months. SAT/ACT score is due by March 1.

You will get in if you can get your Math SAT to 25 or at least a 24.

Would I be a stronger applicant for lower tier CS programs? I was looking at the U of West Florida’s and it was catching my eye. Would I be a lock for a school like that?

Like stated earlier, a 24 or 25 will get you in as a freshman BUT…IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER because at most colleges, you are not “officially” in a major until you are a junior.

You can be an “undeclared major” and still take the freshman/sophomore Math, CS and Physics and if your grades are good enough (the Math major only requires a 2.0), you will be in the program. I would guess that the CS-only major will have a slightly higher GPA for admission at junior year.

What folks are trying to tell you is that as long as you are even ADMITTED to Purdue, you can major in CS.

Purdue math is not for the faint at heart (who teaches Calculus at 730 AM?). The program is good, the facilities good, good faculty, West Lafayette, well, (cough), livable :D.

Hedge your bets and apply to IU also. But do your best to improve your test score of course…
