Low cost dorms

Anyone know much about them? How much less do they cost and are they actually worth it? I wouldn't mind a slightly smaller room, but I don't want a crappy one either. And are they near normal cost ones or are they more isolated?

I think they have low cost rooms in the regular dorms. They are a few thousand cheaper, but you have 3 ppl to a room instead of two.

For 2009-2010 for freshmen only, the rates range from $6620 (Rubin) to $10,874 (3rd Ave N). The low cost rooms are in the regular freshmen dorms. Bryan is correct, three people in a room meant for two. There’s a bunkbed and a single bed.

Upperclass low cost rooms range from $8712 to $10874.

My D id doing a low cost triple at rubin this year and her room is really quite nice. While three in a room meant for two can be slightly crowded, it is doable. Rubin is in a really high end area and you have the view of the arch of Washington Square to your left and the empire state building to your right. Very safe, well lit and many people are walking /jogging in the area and there are 2 churches right across the street.
It is much nicer,IMHO than Hayden.

In hayden, the upper floors have two types of low cost triples. One has a bunk bed and is the size of a double (this is the worst) and another has an awesome view and layout, but only has one closet. Even without applying for a low-cost, I was put into the second type of triple and I love it. The view is amazing.

Rubin isn’t very good compared to other dorms…honestly it’s like a prison. But remember, its all about how you decorate your room.

Personally I’d order my top 3 dorms like so: Hayden, UHall, Britanny. If you want in at Hayden and you’re RD, apply for an exploration floor.

If you apply for low cost dorm because you really need it, what are the chances that you’ll actually get one?

Rubin’s like a prison? You must be joking!
Logan, do a search for different dorm names in the general nyu section here. You’ll get lots of info. The subject of dorms has been beaten to death this time every year.
Also google “live journal nyu” and you can see pics of different rooms.
For low cost triples in Rubin, very often the beds can be “de-bunked.” Most are surprisingly large rooms.
Definitely worth the savings.

Oh, and you save more by getting a LCT in Rubin, since it has no a/c. Only Rubin and Brittany have no a/c.
You save around $2300 for no a/c and another $2300 for LCT roughly. A/c isn’t really a big deal unless you spend alot of time in your room those first few weeks (not a good idea, anyway.)

Rubin is beautiful. Not a prison at all. You must be thinking of a different dorm.

I was last there during the summer and it was hot as hell because they had no a/c. The room I went to wasn’t decorated and the cinder block walls were very barren, so maybe that’s why I associate it with prison. My best experiences in dorms while a freshmen have been in Uhall, Brittany, and Hayden. I guess it’s all just personal preference.

The cinder block walls are Weinstein not Rubin.
