So I had a low freshman gpa both semesters, but got it much higher the rest of my high school career, while taking multiple ap classes. I also participated in a few clubs, and got volunteer hours.

Here's what I got GPA wise unweighted:

3.3 (All B+)
3.5 (B+/A's)
3.8 (All A's from here on)
3.8
3.9
3.9
3.9
3.9

Those are slightly rounded down.

Test Scores:

SAT: 2154
ACT: 34
AP Exams: All 5's is 11 classes

If I were to apply to a college like Northwest or UCB, would my low Freshman GPA seriously cripple my chances of being accepted?

We have a chances thread, go look at some of them and tell us about all of your info and they will chance you for the colleges you’re going to be applying for.

But just as a general rule colleges really look for an upward trend especially one like yours. Your ACT/SAT/AP are top 5% you’ll be fine.

You’ve shown improvement so that’s good, and other than freshman. Year your stats are amazing, and they’re still really good with freshman year. Also I’ve seen a lot of people on here saying that freshman year is seen as a transition year, and therefore not as important. I think you’ll do fine, especially with 5’s on 11 ap’s and your weighted gpa must be great with that many ap’s since you got all A’s after freshman year! Good luck with ecerything

No, it won’t stop you. Admissions officers at highly selective schools love to tell people how many 4.0s they turned down and what percent of the class had something other than a 4.0. For guys especially, with a few Bs in freshman year, great test scores and recs, it shouldn’t make any difference at all.
