Hey everyone. So most of the schools that I'm looking at to transfer have recommended minimum GPAs around 3.0-3.5. I am a sophomore at Connecticut College currently with a 3.1 and hopefully will be increasing in the next two semesters. My question is does the fact that I am getting this GPA at Connecticut College, a rather selective and prestigious school, rather than a community college or less respected school, give me an advantage? Essentially, is my 3.1 here more valuable than a 4.0 at less rigorous schools? Will schools like Northwestern, USC, Claremonts, Northeastern, etc.. give my GPA more respect than a 3.1 elsewhere? Thanks

For the most part NO. There is no table of chart for administration to consult; Like a 3.1 GPA at this school equals a 3.7 at this school.

But for USC specifically, if you plan to transfer in with under 30 (or 32 units; forget which) they will heavy your HS transcripts more heavily.

Yes I understand that there is no exact conversion, but it must be taken into consideration somehow, no? For example (as an extreme), if someone was applying to Northwestern from Harvard with a 3.0 as a junior (high school grades are less relevant), I would only expect that they have higher chances than anyone out of any community college with a 4.0, agree or disagree?

I don’t think there’s much argument that when considering grades, the rigor of the coursework and school are taken into consideration. However, whether or not attending Conn College will bump a 3.1 gpa into competitive range to transfer up to a more selective college is another question. IMO, no.

I think you are overstating your current institution and gpa’s correlation to other schools. Private colleges, especially high-mid ranked ones, are well-known for grade inflation. I don’t know Conn Colleges exact reputation in this area but it’s something to think about. Comparing a 3.1 to be better than a community college 4.0 or less rigorous school is an enormous stretch. In my very amateur opinion I would say a 3.1 from a a liberal arts college who has grade inflation would MAYBE be comparable to a less rigorous schools 3.3 or 3.4. Looking at past threads I would say you have a small chance at USC and a VERY small chance at the claremont colleges which only bring in a very very few amount of transfer students a year. Northeastern looks like the most reasonable aspiration if we’re just basing this off your gpa.

When grades are the same. 3.8 at CC and 3.8 at Harvard; it is easy to add in some brownie points for academic rigor. But when you get into a situation of good gpa/low rank school and low gpa/high rank school it becomes more of a wash.

The avg transfer gpa at USC is around a 3.67 with an acceptance rate of 30% so a lot of people are being rejected.

One thing i would add is a 4.0 out of CC seems like a student that is trying hard and wants to go somewhere. A 3.1 at a good university seems like someone who is lazy and just isn’t working hard enough. Who would you want at your university? someone who hasn’t got a chance at uni yet or someone who is blowing their chance?
