Don’t do what you can’t handle.
I know smart people who took too many challenging classes. Now they’re at community colleges because they messed up their GPAs.
Does your school offer honors courses?

Anyways, I’ve seen B+s in challenging classes and straight As in easy classes (step down from honors or AP) make it into top 30 schools. So I figure these are kind of equivalent (in terms of admissions). However, you are doing yourself a disservice in the long run by taking easier classes. If you can identify the one or two classes that you’ll struggle the most in and have the most work just to get a medicore to bad grade, then drop down in those. I’ve seen students with half honors/AP classes and half regular classes get into HYPSM. They’re gaming the system and not fully challenging themselves, but it works.
