LOW GPA, Good ECS- Chance Me please ED2 Stern

Hey guys I will keep this post as short as possible. My grades have been steadily rising through high school and I had a really good last tri of junior year, but did terrible in Algebra 2(got B, C and B-); how does this affect my chances? I honestly did not know how college admissions worked until 2nd tri of junior year (I thought we applied at the end of senior year), should I explain this in my essay?

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): NA

ACT:30

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.3 slight upward trend, will have a 3.8+ gpa last tri of senior year. Does this help? Last tri of Junior year I got a 3.56 because of that B-(had 4 A-'s and 1 A)

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): IDK but probably lower than top 25%

AP (place score in parenthesis): Took 5 or 6 Aps. Did not take tests

Course Load: 3 Aps 1 Honors(senior), I always had at least 3/6 honors or AP classes and I think the max is 4. I didn't have more because of scheduling issues with French
Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Did not do anything with my school but I did stuff on my own.

Job/Work Experience: I started a business selling WOW and game gold in 9th grade and ran it until 10th grade. I made $300 but that helped fuel my passion for business. I have had a job since 11th grade working as a freelancer doing Reputation Management and have made 1k+ for myself. Recently started my own Reputation Management company am on track to generate $30k a year

Volunteer/Community service: 0

Summer Activities: Went to Togo for 2 months

Essays: Pretty good. Wrote about business failure and how I learned from it.

Teacher Recommendation: Both teachers liked me. 1 from Honors LIT and 1 AP Econ

Counselor Rec: Do I need one? If so, probably generic

State (if domestic applicant): MN

Country (if international applicant): USA

School Type: Public, Average

Ethnicity: Black born in Togo

Gender: M

Income Bracket: Probably less than $40k for family of 6

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection
Strengths: I am really passionate about business and money but I didn't always make school my top priority.

You just never know with these things. Your ACT is great and helps demonstrate a lot of strength. How was the math section? For Stern, this will be important given that your Algebra 2 course was not that strong. Have you taken any math beyond Algebra 2? I think they will expect you to have taken Calculus so that could be the hiccup in this. Stern is extremely math heavy and this doesn’t sound like your strength. You seem entrepreneurial and independent. You might want to consider a major where you can shine more in your app and might have a better shot at admittance. Another option is taking a year in CC to polish your math and then apply. On the plus side, you are an URM and first gen college so that is a help and your ECs are strong but you will really need to convey why NYU is the best fit for you. Ad yes, i think a letter from the GC is a requirement. Try to put something together to help your GC know you better and to be able to make it a more personal letter highlighting your strengths. Best of luck and give it your all!

I’m in Pre calc at the moment. I did well took algebra 1 in 8th grade but I had to retake it in 9th grade, so instead of being in calc I’m in Precalc. The algebra 2 grade is bad because of a bad teacher (smartest kids in our school had to retake 1 test 2 times). I like math a lot but the learning format for Alg2 was not right for me. The act math section comes pretty naturally to me. I am a URM but I don’t know if I am first gen. My mom has an associates from a community college and my dad has a master’s from Hamline in St. Paul. Thanks for the reply lightningmom

Ok, you said first gen in your OP. but sounds like you are not given your parents degrees, but you’re still URM :-). Still not exactly clear about the math progression, but schools vary so widely that the main thing colleges will look at is where you are relative to your peers within your particular school. That’s what the GC letter addresses most as well as any extenuating circumstances that might account for issues with grades, etc;

Thanks lightningmom. I don’t know my GC that well so I don’t know what she will write. I will try to explain the grades and involvement to her. I am not in Calc because I got a C in 8th grade algebra 1 and had to basically repeat in high school. I was 1 year ahead until I came into 9th grade where I had to repeat

The GC usually just gives some discussion of your school and the curriculum you’ve selected within that school. Lots of students prepare a resume or “brag sheet” to give their GC so they can write a more personal letter. Many students find their GC doesn’t know them that well so colleges understand that. Choose your other letter writers as well as you can. Give them info about you too which helps them write a stronger letter
