Low GPA, High SAT, ACT,AP - What colleges to apply

Hi

I am an Asian American from California going to a pretty competitive school.

Here are my stats -GPA: 3.39 (UC Weighted & Capped)
Unweighted GPA on my Transcript is 2.9

AP Scholar with Distinction:

AP Calculus BC Score 5 (Calculus BC: AB Sub score 5)
AP Chemistry Score 5
AP English language and composition Score 4
AP Physics B Score 5
AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism Score 5
AP Physics C: Mechanics Score 5
AP Computer Science Score 5
PSAT - Commended Scholar California (Score 219)
ACT Composite, : Composite Score 35/36
SAT: Score 2150/2400
Mathematics Level 2 800/800
Physics 800/800
Chemistry 730/800

I also have some repeats to repair grades which will show in the transcript. My test scores are my strength as you can see. I would like to do computer science or electrical engineering. What colleges should I apply to? I would like to apply for some colleges where I will have a decent chances of acceptance. I cant compare with others in my school ( they all have 3.5+ unweighted GPA). Any ideas on where I might have a chance?

What is your weighted GPA (not your weighted UC GPA)

How much will your parents pay?

What kind of schools are you considering? Your GPA is going to limit you a lot if you’re expecting highly ranked schools.

my parents are willing to pay for me to get to a good college. My school only puts unweighted GPA on our transcript.
weighted would be as below

Grade 9 -2.6
Grade 10- 3.4
Grade 11-3.5
So it would be around 3.1 GPA weighted

I would like to go to schools with good reputation, and definitely want to go to a 4 year college, as I would like to do research eventually. So research based universities would be great fit for me I think.

You may want to look at Cal Poly Pomona. They have a very good program and are an easier admit than some of the UCs.

Your test scores and rigor of schedule are very good. Im sure an emphasis will be puy on those more than your gpa. With that said, I think youll be fine applying

All the Calif publics weight GPA more than test scores. So, his GPA could be an issue.

Most state flagships in the midwest or south will probably accept you, particularly if your family can afford full pay.

Cal Poly Pomona is not a research university and does not come near the UCs in terms of diversity of research projects which UGs can get involved in. I’d recommend looking into UCSC as the CS program is quite good and they have numerous opportunities for research.

I’ll second the recommendation about Midwestern flagships. For the vast majority of Midwestern schools, other than perhaps U Minnesota, UIUC, UMichigan, and UWisconisn, you’d be automatically admitted to their engineering program. If you want to stay closer to home, the only non UC Western schools which might reject you from their engineering program are U Washington, UT Austin, Texas A&M, and CU Boulder (although you’d likely get into CAS).

Thank you very much for the suggestions, that is very helpful for building my list.

So, what schools are on your list?

and, why are your UW grades so low for your test scores?

The problem I see that you’ll have at most good schools is this: Your grades suggest that you don’t do homework or assignments, so your grades suffer.

You are right, I don’t do home work and assignments. I cant do any kind of busy work and had a hard time with world language. I also miss on grades where presentations are involved as I am not good at that. It’s like I cant make myself to do such work and I missed some school days last year. The school did an assessment and put me in IEP this year. Because of IEP I have to go to an learning skills class this year.

That IEP is actually going to help you explain your GPA so be glad your school put you in IEP :)

Apply to a couple UC’s. Even if your grades can’t compare with your classmates’, as long as you don’t try for UCB, UCSD, or UCLA you should be able to get into one.
Then there are all the midwestern and southern flagships, if your family can afford to pay.
As a safety, South Dakota school of Mines and Technology.
I think that even U Minnesota Twin Cities should be within range for you and you can look into Missouri University of Science and Technology - thanks to that IEP.

That is good to know. I did get a U Minn golden gopher application. So I am definitely applying there. I will now look into South Dakota and Missouri University. Thank your for all the suggestions.

U Maryland places strong emphasis on test scores.

Beware of the fact that schools are sending you info based on your test scores. The best schools with competitive admissions into CS will have serious issues with your GPA.

What are you going to do in college when you’re given assignments that you don’t like?

As a safety, Alabama would accept you. It has a brand new mega sized Science and Engineering Complex. Gorgeous campus, good CS.

With your IEP in place do you find you are doing well this year? You show an upward trend since 9th grade. Keep that up and force yourself to do your work even if its tedious. Lots of what we do in life is tedious but you still need to gut it out and do the work. I would think tech schools would be very interested in you with those scores which are very impressive. Take a look at RPI, WPI, Case Western as well as the previously recommended schools.

Yes, Planning to apply for RPI and Case Western , I have to look into WPI now. Thanks for the information.

Yes, I am aware of that, I have got few more fee waivers based on my test scores.

I don’t always miss assignments I do the interesting ones.

I will check University of Alabama too.

Alabama will very likely accept you, especially if you apply now. Your GPA is too low for the assured scholarships, but you might get some scholarship award for your test scores.

Alabama would also give you credit for both Frosh Comp English classes for your 4 in AP English Comp (plus credits for your other AP exams).

@g4 “I do the interesting ones”… no  You do ALL of them, regardless of how you feel about them and no matter how tedious they are. Keep your eyes on the prize. :)

Canadian universities are very score-driven, especially AP driven, and sometimes they don’t take GPAs into account. Look into that (UBC, McGill are probably out of reach but you never know since they focus on AP scores; check out Waterloo, Simon Fraser, Dalhousie, Calgary where you’re within range and your test scores would factor heavily.)
I second the Tech School idea, too, but apply to a wide range of them.
