I have a really low unweighted GPA of 3.31 but I also have a high SAT score of 2290: CR - 760, M - 800, W - 730. I have a bit of concern regarding how colleges will look at my application because of my low GPA. The only reason why my GPA is that bad is because I was goofing off during freshman year and half of my sophomore year but have made all As since the beginning of this year in all AP classes. I am planning on applying to UT Austin, Baylor, Rice, SMU and maybe Berkley. Any opinions on how my application is going to be viewed with respect to my GPA would be greatly appreciated

Addition Info: I am a Junior. My school says that both unweighted and weighted are on a 4.0 scale and i have a 4.4 Weighted. I am also Rank 110/769 = 14.30%.

Baylor will give you a lot of money. Go on their website and run their calculator. (One of my sons has similar stats.) As to the others, ask me after this admission cycle. My son is also applying to Berkeley, (we are hoping, but not holding our breath. He DOES have an absolute ton of APs, which I understand they like.) His brother is applying to UT, but the brother has more ‘regular stats’, not as up and down as you and my other son do. We are applying broadly for him, because we have no clue how it will be viewed, either.

I know a kid that got all b’s but was accepted into Oberlin Ed with a 2200 sat.

Many universities will put more weight on your Junior and Senior year courses. If you demonstrate that you can do the work and you have good SAT scores, it should be no problem getting into the programs you want.

Junior year is what really counts, as long as you show a strong upward trend, you should be OK.

It depends on the schools you are going to apply. Some schools like UMich put more weight on GPA. Most others do not.

Admission to UTexas is almost entirely based on class rank. Being outside the top 7% will really hurt you. Are you aware of the cost you will pay being an OOS student for Berkeley?
