Low GPA International Transfer?

Hi All,

I am 4th year undergraduate student in China (the music major) want to change to transfer US for bachelor degree. I may choose not to graduate from the China university.

I am open about the major, hope to change to marketing or arts management, but believe I can prepare better future in the US university. My GPA little low, 2.5, and I try to reach TOEFL 80.

What kind of university will let me enter as transfer student? I hope to enter in Fall 2016.

Thanks for the help!

It’s a little too late for your transfer.
If you change your major now it will set you back for at least two years and you must full pay to get in any half way decent schools.

Do you want to spend some thing like $100 to 150k USD just to get an undergraduate degree?

You would likely have to spend 2 or 3 years working on arts management or marketing. Can your parents afford 2-3 years in the US at full cost?
Is that a “real” 2.5 or is that your own estimation? Because 2.5 is quite low (2 is the minimum before you’re kicked out after a period of probation… so, really, all graduating students have between 2 and 4. No one graduates with a 1.6 GPA for instance.)
Can you devote time to English in order to get a strong TOEFL score? It’d certainly help you.
In addition, it’s harder to apply for a 2nd bachelor’s, so indeed it’d be better if you transferred for the US if you don"t graduate from your university. HOWEVER, if you don’t graduate this year, will your Chinese university allow you to return at a later date to graduate (if you find that, ultimately, you’d rather work in that field and in China)?
There are universities that may work but we need to know your budget and your motivation.

Thank for your replies! I am working hard on TOEFL now. My gpa is currently 2.5 but not sure if US schools will calculate the same way. I originally wanted to get a Masters, but I think I need more preparation in the US as an undergraduate first–should help me more. I also don’t think I would be successful in GRE at this time.

I hope to transfer to the US as a transfer, but how do colleges see this? It may seem strange because I have almost completed the 4th year and the major I want (marketing, economics, etc.) is very different than music. Might you have any schools or resources to recommend help me find schools that would be good for my strange profile?

You didn’t answer the question about your parents being able to pay full freight for you. If that’s the case, we can suggest several schools for you to investigate.

Sorry! Yes, I am prepared to pay the cost of a US college education.

Okay then. There are lots of choices, as long as you understand most of your credits won’t transfer. Deadlines for Fall 2015 transfers have not passed.
You can apply to Baruch college in New York City but your odds aren’t very good due to your grades. Their management program is very good though, and with a required minor (in your case, art history/art), you’d be able to transfer to a more prestigious Arts Management Master (such as in DC’s American University, or in NYC.)
Susquehanna University has an AACSB-accredited business school, is very friendly, and would likely admit you with a 2.5 provided you’ve got a class in calculus and are willing to take all the semesters you need.
There are lots more but I’m short on time for now – now that we know your parents can invest to pay full costs, there are lots of possibilities.

Thank you! I will be sure to check these schools.
