I am a Junior MIS (Management Information Systems) Major. My cumulative GPA is a 3.23 and my major gpa so far is a 4.0 but I have a good amount of MIS classes left to take. I am upset because my cum GPA is low basically because of one semester. My GPAs have been 3.37, 3.41, 2.80 and 3.37. That 2.8 lowered me from around a 3.39 to a 3.18. I have raised it a little to that 3.23 but still. I have had two internships, one a sales and service internship at an insurance company and the other was a marketing internship at a tech start up company. Barely anything related to MIS yet but I am trying to find one for this summer. Am I still in an okay situation despite my slightly lower GPA? Also, how do you get over one bad semester that made such a big difference on my overall GPA? Thank you.

You’re very consistent, actually, with your grades. Identifying what happened that one semester would be good knowledge for you to have so you can perhaps avoid those events in the future. Or turn that semester into a life lesson that you can use in interviews and application essays.

You’re only a first semester junior, it appears, so now’s the time to make your move to a 3.5 or better this semester. Do so, and no one pays much attention to the 2.8. All they look at is the end product GPA. Most of the rest of your courses will be in a major where you’re doing well already. So everything is looking quite bright. Worrying about that 2.8 won’t do any good nor make any difference. Look forward, not back.

A lot of us have 2.8 semesters and still get good jobs out of college. Set goals for yourself each semester. And have a plan for how you’re going to get there.

I actually left out last semester (3.21) which kept my GPA at 3.23 anyway so I have 3 semester left and not 4 but everything you said still applies. It’s very helpful and I’ll try to just move on from the past and try to raise my GPA as much as I can with the rest of the time that I have. Thank you very much again!!

You need to know that the internships and any experience you get will carry far more water with potential employers than the GPA. Your GPA is respectable and will get glanced at as being such, but what they really will want to know is what technologies you are comfortable with.

I think that one semester was also a big combination of me being lazy and partying unfortunately.

Don’t admit that in an interview. Mononucleosis would be a better excuse.

^ Don’t lie. Just say you had a bad semester and rededicated yourself to your studies. That will show more character and be the truth.
