So I've just finished the first semester of my sophomore year in college and saying that things haven't gone well would be a kind way of stating how things have gone for me so far.

From my estimation, I'm gonna have a 2.55 GPA in mechanical engineering with C's/C+'s everywhere. Many of my friends have been doing quite well, with GPAs above a 3.0, while I'm stuck in a rut with my lowly GPA. At this point I'm quite discouraged and am starting to have doubts as to whether I'll be successful in my major.

Granted, my work ethic hasn't been very good and there may be plenty of things I could do to fix things, but a part of me can't help but wonder if I should be considering a different major at this point. I've already dug myself into a deep hole- I'm having trouble finding jobs because the ones I've found are either looking for juniors/seniors, or are requiring a GPA above a 3.0. I also wanted to do research with professors at some point during college, but I'm having doubts about that because my GPA doesn't bode well for any type of work.

At this point how screwed am I and what should I do? Should I just push on with my current major and hope for the best (while attempting to improve my work ethic, of course) or start anew with a different major?
