low grade in art class

I'm taking a studio art elective this year, beause I'm really bad at art but I like it and want to practice and get better.

Consequently, I'll probably only be getting an 80-85 (don't know what that is...B- maybe?). Art counts as half a class in my school's grading system, but still it'll bring down my otherwise ~96 average considerably.

Will colleges just look at the lower GPA and see it as a bad thing, or would they understand I decided to try something new, that I knew I wouldn't necessarily do well in, because of a genuine interest? Do art and other "non-academic" classes factor heavil in the scheme of things?

Thanks.

haha same thing here, only my art class was a few years ago (had to take it)

I think it'll depend on where you apply/ what you are apply for. some major (such as chemical engineering) could care less if you can draw a face or not

Most schools recalculate your gpa according to their own system, and many will only use your core courses in the calculation. I don't think you need to worry about it at all.

Thanks! That's good news =)

Incidentally, I'm still glad I took it (especially with this news), I got an 80 on the last project but my drawing is definitely improving! (the problem, of course, is the baseline it started from...)

Haha... me too... I took Studio Art Experience 1st hour, 1st semester of my Freshman year and got an A- (92.3... and 92.5 is an A). So my valedictorian chances were ruined... by an art class...

Wow...

:)

Yeah I took photography knowing I sucked at it, I just really enjoy it. Luckily I ended up with the easier teacher and got an A anyways, but if a college doesn't understand learning for learning's sake, then I don't want them anyways

ah i wish i had a studio art course in my school.. but we don't =[

Are you interested in applying to a art school?

No not at all, like I said I can't draw for my life =P but I'm practicing, and I like art, which is why I took the class in the first place.

Oh, and HiWei, relax =) I don't think most colleges will care if you're first or fifth or tenth or whatever in your class (unless it's a class of five...), and at least personally, if they did I wouldn't want to go there anyway.

At my school the 50 percentile mark is around a grade of 90-92 (A- I guess?) so even wanting to be in the top 10% is crazy, and often people get higher grades just because they didn't take as hard courses or only took electives they knew they'd be super at, which the GPA doesn't take into accound (and I'm hoping colleges will...)
