Hello,
I wanted to find out if I had a chance to go to Rice:
Rank: 40% (sucks I know, i was sick freshman year and they denied credit for 5 classes)
ACT: 32
ACT Math:34 (I want to study engineering)
EC:
Mayors Youth Advisory Council
Help Who Ever is in Need
Tennis Club (president)
French NHS
NHS
etc...
Lots of Volunteer hours

Mom works for Rice (but she will not help me get in)

I`m Tatar (only about 100 of those in the US, it is a group of people born in Tatarstan)

All AP classes
Mostly A's after freshmen year

Please, help me out since I don't want to get my hopes up or down

University of Michigan doesn’t factor freshman year into their decision making process, so if you go there then you have a great shot of making it in, especially with the Tatar status, which is something I’ve never seen before on these boards.

When applying to schools that do take freshman year into account, make sure that you explain why you lost credit in your personal statement. If they see mostly A’s in all AP classes then they will probably disregard your freshman stats to some extent.

You seem like a pretty average candidate to be honest. Qualified, but nothing is definite. Play up the Tartar in your essays and make sure they’re strong and teacher recs as well.

Are you applying for aid? I know at Rice that’s important.

My mother is a research Biochemist.
I will not be applying for aid because Rice gives a full scholarship to all children of full time employees. But I`m really worried about my low gpa
Thanks

Well when the Rice admin people came to my school this is what they said:
We arent going to just look at class rank or GPA, we really dont look at those at all. What we will do is look at your individual grades in your classes and how tough your course was, this is mostly for your junior year.

With that information you should be able to form your own opinion (but i think it helps you ALOT!!!)

Ouh yeah and I forgot to mention. My intended field of study is engineering and I had experience with ThermoFisher Scientific, Salkar (russian company), and RTF (Uzbekistan company), both are affiliated with Lukoil. [- OAO «LUKOIL»](http://www.lukoil.com/) A big Gas Giant.

Adcom say the darnedest things! Somehow, they could care less about rank but come up with 86% in the top 10% of their class just like all the other schools on it’s level!

HIGH SCHOOL CLASS RANK (Class of 20081)

1st in class 21%
2nd in class 6%
Top 5% (including above) 76%
Top 10% (including above) 86%
