Lower division classes for UC transfers

Hi everybody,

I'm attending UCSD this fall and was a little confused as to how I will be able to register for my classes. I know that they hold open spots for transfers so that they're able to get a place, but I have a few lower division classes to take still (Bio, Calc etc). Does anyone know if the UC's keep spots open in these classes, rather than solely in upper division classes?

Thank you in advance!

The UCs don’t hold spots open for transfers. I wish! My first quarter at UCSD is looking shot to hell and I can’t even register until August. I’ve been told that the first couple of quarters pretty much sucks for transfers in general. Sorry!

Wow, that’s terrible. So even after your first quarter, you don’t receive priority registration? That makes me very sad for my first few quarters at UCSD… =(

If you are a veteran you can fax a copy of your DD214 to the financial aid office and get priority registration that way. I did it but I guess I was too late to get priority for fall quarter, however I do have it for winter quarter. But yeah, the first couple of quarters after transfer are apparently tough.

You must not have transferred via IGETC. It’s imperative these days to get your prereqs done ASAP, because unfortunately lower division courses tend to be gobbled up by first-years looking to get it over with.

You still have a chance of getting in, however, so all is not lost. You may want to bring it up with a professor and potentially crash the course.

I actually did transfer via IGETC, I just have a few calculus/science courses that aren’t finished because I switched from being an Econ major to Computer Science. I’m definitely going to try to get into whatever classes the professors will let me into. Thanks for your advice! =)

Hey BendyStraw: Not sure if this is college-specific (I’m in Revelle), but the New Student website is open and might be able to give you some good information on who to talk to about getting into classes. I saw some info on waitlisting on there earlier.

Jamesinho: Thanks for the info! I actually went through Marshall’s website and found the phone number for an academic adviser in the CSE department. When I spoke with her, she told me that although it appears that all classes are currently full, once the transfer enrollment time rolls around (late August) more seats that have been specifically saved for incoming transfers will open and we’ll be able to snag them. (Specifically, for CSE major’s references: spots in the CSE 8 and 11 series will be opening for us). I asked her if this was the same throughout the campus, and she told me she could only speak for the CSE department, but she was fairly sure that all the other departments do something similar.

=) This made my day, hope it helps some other people as well!

@Bendystraw: That is fantastic news! Thanks for sharing! I feel a little less apprehensive about the Fall now. :)
