Hi, you guys. I'm a newbie here, and I was wondering if you could help me with something. Its kinda unusual, but I want to be done with my lower division requirements for UCs in, well, one year instead of two. So that gives me four(?) quarters instead of 8. Im going to start at community college in summer, and will be finishing up by spring/summer of 2012. The main problem I'm having is with the time frame. UCs require you to apply by November 30th, and Ill be only half way through my requirements till then. Does that automatically disqualify me since technically by that time I dont have enough units to transfer? I know on the websites it says you're supposed to finish "prior to spring" - how does that work out? Do they mean the spring right before I start at a UC in the fall or the spring before I APPLY for transfer? How do I let them know I'll be done with my units by spring? How will they check that? And what, exactly, is TAG? Sorry its all so confusing >_>

You can definitely apply but exactly how many units are you going to be taking each quarter? Are you DEFINITELY going to have 60 by the end of Spring semester? Will you be done with the IGETC? What is your intended major? Most UCs want you to take pre-reqs for that also.

When you fill out the UC application, there is a section to input your grades and what you plan to take the following quarter. I was transferring from a semester system so I’m not entirely sure if you’ll be able to input your planned classes for Winter and Spring or if you will include them on the academic update.

Getting into the courses you will need to transfer will be hard enough to do in two years let alone one. When my youngest son finally was able to register yesterday there were no courses at all available for Summer session and for Fall semester there was not a single opening in any CCC in Sacramento County for a UC transferable English class, all had been full for at least a week. You absolutely can not transfer without the English class. My son is a Physics major so he also has to finish many prerequisites. Of the five semesters of Math classes he needs he was able to register for one and was unable to register for any of the three semesters of Physics and none of the two semesters of Chemistry he also needs to complete before a UC would accept him. If you have a major with very few prerequisites you might be able to transfer in two years but if you are a natural science or engineering major I do not see how it can be done in less than three years under current circumstances.

[University of California - Transfer Admission Guarantee](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/transfer/guarantee/index.html)
TAG guarantees admission to a UC of your choice (except UCLA and Cal which do not offer TAGs). As long as you fulfill what the contract requires (complete certain classes by ___semester, etc) your TAG will be fine.

As for completing lower division in one year…I hear it’s tough. Most people I’ve seen on the boards who’ve done it took classes during high school so only had like 40 units to do during the remaining year. BUT if you can manage to pack it all in, complete most/all pre-reqs in time, and get 60 units by spring 2012…go for it!? If it ends up being too much for you, you always take the following year to finish up.

What is your major?

I’m planning to do the same thing you’re doing!
However, I already have 32 quarter units from AP tests, and so I only need 13 more quarter units to initiate a TAG (you need 45 to initiate a tag), units that I will be doing during the summer. Then I’m spending fall, winter, and spring quarters finishing all the lower division requirements. Finally, next summer I’ll finish IGETC (UC Davis lets you do this). It really depends on which UC you’re planning on, and how much work you’re willing to put it. Good luck to both of us!
