Anyone attending the Loyola College Day on the first weekend of February?

As a Loyola Parent , I would recommend attending this. I would also recommend that you attend College day activities at any of the schools you are interested in. It is a good way to choose a College. Also, be wary of guides that don't answer your questions directly and who don't show you all the Buildings they don't want you to see. They may be hiding something. Also demand to see a Freshman dorm room, this can be very revealing. Also, observe if the current students are friendly and happy. This was very noticeable at Loyola. Check "Loyola it is" in this Loyola group where a student chose Loyola over Drexel because she thought the students at Drexel didn't seem happy. When you have your final Four-Five order some books from the College ******* website. They give good insight into a College.

Thanks...those are great points...I just checked out that thread. Too funny how you and another CC member were in the same tour group!!

My D is very excited for the College Day event. However, I'm a little nervous that she will absolutely fall in love with the school and we don't get the financial aid we need. While her GPA and ECs are all excellent, she does not test very well.....so her test scores don't meet the minimum for any of the scholarships they offer.

So how was your D's first semester at Loyola? I'm assuming from your name that you live in Maryland. Did she come home a lot? How did she like her professors, the students, clubs and administration? And if you don't mine me asking...what is your D's major? My D is planning to be a biology major.

Thanks again!

She will fall in love with Loyola so prepare your self for that. LOL If she has good grades, EC and her SATs are in the range she will get in because my daughter was in the same boat. her SATs were good but not outstanding but well in the range. Check my answer to day about why she chose Loyola it pulls my other thoughts together. They kept rejecting it I think because I named the schools. As far as paying for College don't be shy about expecting your daughter to contribute to the costs especially if the school is expensive. My daughter pays about $7,000 a year towards her education between loans, summer jobs and her savings. She needs to contribute.

I have to continue because it stopped me? As I mentioned before she likes her professors and is involved in many activities including the School paper, OPTIONs and is now seeking to get involved in the Social Justice group. She also has an on campus Work Study job as part of her Financial Aid. She loves Fr Linane who will speak at the College Days and enjoys his speeches. She is an English and Writing major. the Biology program is excellent. Good luck at College days. See my other answers i posted at "calling all Loyola students. I finally got my big answer through. LOL

We live about 40 minutes away and my daughter came home three times for Family Events which my wife required her attendance. I had to drag her out of Loyola kicking and screaming. LOL She only plans to come home once this semester for a BDay party and then just Spring Break. For what it costs to go to College nowadays I don't want her coming home alot. I want her to get the whole experience.

BRavens - thank you for all your input!! I have read most of your posts and really appreciate it. I know my D will fall in love with it after College Day...but I guess that's a good thing :)

I'm glad to hear that your D is enjoying herself at Loyola. My daughter also applied to the Chestertown college and the one near the civil war field :) Just like Loyola, they both have an articulation agreement with the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (she wants to be a pediatric nurse practitioner). Our preference, of course, is Loyola which she has been accepted to...still waiting on the other two.

Do you know if Loyola will take into consideration my D's 1st semester senior grades when evaluating her for financial aid? She just found out that she's getting all A's and one B while taking 5 AP classes including Biology, Calculus, Lit. This report will definitely boost her GPA higher. We've already prepared her to carry a big load of the tuition and she has no problem with it. I just don't want her to end up with a huge college debt at the end.

I noticed you did not mention any interest in the state's college park campus. Was she just not interested? We have not heard yet whether my D got accepted to it or not...but if the chips don't fall favorable with these private colleges, she may end up at college park. She just doesn't care for the large campuses and feel more comfortable in the smaller, private colleges.

Thanks again!!

She thought College Park was too large so she was never really interested. Her safety school was Towson. I am curious as to your opinion of the school in Chestertown because the only thing we liked about it was the $10,000 reduction in Tuition for being in the NHS. They also all but accepted her on the spot which we thought was a little weird. As to the Civil War school, we liked it alot and it was definitely #2 but a distant #2. I work at JHH. small world!! As far as Financial Aid is concerned if you are Maryland Residents complete your FAFSA online before march 1st and you should get some State money. Also apply to your State Senators and Legislators ASAP because she should get some money from them if she stays in Maryland for school. I am not sure that her grades will affect her Financial Aid at any school because it is supposed to be based on ability to pay. She may get some money from the College itself but I don't know how that works if at all. Hang in there and go after that state money if you live in Maryland. Its almost automatic.

Thanks again BRavens! We definitely will hope for some State money.

As for the Chestertown college, she just got her acceptance letter yesterday. I didn't care for the campus all that much...too isolated and small. However, that didn't bother my daughter. She likes small and intimate environments. I try not to sway her decision too much because I want her to make the decision. She felt that the college would do a good job guiding her through the 3-2 program with JHU SON.

And yes, what a small word that you work at JHH. Would you know or can you ask the nurses what School of Nursing is considered to be the most reputable...specifically, Villanova SON, Penn State SON and UMD SON? Any information you may gather, we would GREATLY appreciate it!!

Unfortunately, I have no contact with any of the Nursing staff so I can't help you on this. Let me know how College Day turns out.
