Undecided about Loyola

My daughter really likes Loyola's campus, but is concerned about the reviews she read about it being a party school with nothing to do but drink on the weekends. Is there anything for a non-drinker to do on the weekends?

DS is a sophomore at Loyola at loves it. There certainly are drinkers, but there a lot of other students into community service, clubs, and other on campus actitivities. Loyola also offers Options, which includes school sponsored weekend trips and events that are very reasonably priced. In addition, there is a lot to do off campus in Baltimore and even Washington, DC, although costs could add up.
Good luck with your decision.

My daughter will be attending Loyola in the fall. We have family friends whose daughter is a freshman and LOVES the school and is not a big drinker. She has gravitated towards like minded students. She goes to the athletic complex and works out every day, attends lots of sporting events, goes to the mall with friends, takes advantage of Baltimore, etc. I haven’t heard of a school yet that someone doesn’t say, “I heard that’s a big party school”!!

My daughter is still trying to decide too. She loves Loyola, but did also hear about its reputation. She’s deciding between Loyola and Connecticut College. She went to a very small HS so is worried that Conn is too small, and it will be too much like her HS. I am glad to read your posts.

my daughter hated it. very dangerous area around the school and nothing to do but take cabs to bars… and it was rediculously expensive. she transferred to university of north carolina and loves it,.lots of sports and alot to do…good luck

It is important to thoroughly check out a school before you enroll. Loyola does not hide their costs or location. My son is a sophomore at Loyola and loves it. He has made many lifelong friends and is getting a fantastic education. One of the best things, I have found is that when he changed his mind about his major in his freshman year, he easily transferred into the business school. Our main concern is that he gets a job when he gets out of school. He can go to a football game anytime.

Our son is a freshman at Loyola and has learned and grown more than I could have imagined this past year.

U.S. News Report ranks Loyola #3 in Best Colleges in the North Region, and reports a 90% retention rate among freshman.

Not everyone finds the perfect college the first time around. Our son was fortunate to pick a college that is bringing out the best in him academically and socially. He has learned to balance enjoying the social scene (Oriole games, Kanye West and JayZee concerts, trips to DC to watch NBA, dance clubs, etc) while at the same time striving to make the Dean’s list and take the most out of class each day.

Loyola offers leadership programs, clubs, intramurals, sporting events (men’s basketball made it to March Madness and men’s lacrosse is ranked #1 in the country as I type), community service opportunities. Contrary to what I read about nothing to do but take cabs to bars, there are plenty of ways to participate in a healthy way that allows each student to grow and excel.

Loyola is an excellent University and we are thrilled with our son’s decision to attend.

My daughter, a non-drinker, declined offers by several prestigious universities, accepted a scholarship and attended Loyola University Maryland. She joined leadership programs, clubs and did volunteer work during weekends. She graduated with honors (summa cum laude) and won a prestigious research fellowship to a beautiful country in Europe after graduation. Loyola university Maryland is an excellent teaching institution.
