Loyola Marymount Class of 2027 Official Thread

Daughter waitlisted as well. Can’t remember what she applied for. Sociology maybe. Or Anthropology. She seems fine with it, moving on! Congratulations to all admitted.

It’s possible, but not likely. Last year 69 people got in off the waitlist. They put 6788 on the waitlist.

My son was waitlisted. He’s in everywhere else he applied, including 2 schools that are much more selective than LMU. He’s a little perplexed, but OK moving on.

My daughter was accepted. We are in the UK. Waiting for merit scholarship notifications which are out in a few days. As an international student this will help with our decision, whether to take up the place or not. Congratulations to all accepted, and best wishes to all the other students without offers. It always works out in the end.

My DD was just accepted to the film & tv program (animation) after being deferred. Congratulations to all of the students for their hardworking. Almost to the finish line for senior year. They will all land exactly where they are meant to be.

Waitlisted after deferred, computer science. 3.7 UW 4.1 W. 4 aps, test optional

My D23 was also waitlisted after being deferred in EA. We are on the East Coast and she has decided that she does not want to be all the way cross the country after all, so she is fine with it. I was surprised though. According to SCOIR nobody from her school with her stats has even been denied. We thought this was a target school for her, along with Chapman (which she was accepted to). To be fair, ,she did not reach out to her AO or write a LOCI, so lack of interest may have been an issue.

Psych major. 3.6 UW GPA but good rigor (all honors and AP classes when available) at a competitive large public HS. Captain for 3 seasons of ver varsity sport, many volunteer hours, lifeguard and part time job.

My son was also accepted for theatre yesterday! :tada:

Hi. My daughter got waitlisted and I guess we are confused and sad. She has a 4.6 weighted GPA (3.96 UW with only 1 B in one semester of an AP class), took 6 AP classes and as many honors courses as she could, and submitted her SATs which were 1420, in the top quartile for LMU. And she wrote really wonderful essays and supplementals. She had average extracurriculars, and some of that was affected by COVID and being remote for a year. She is crushed and doesn’t know what she could have done differently and is incredibly discouraged about the rest of her applications, as all of them are to schools more selective than LMU.

Any insight I could share with her? Thank you for listening.

Wow. This is pretty shocking. It seems like LMU would have snapped her up in a second! What is her major? I’m sorry. It’s very defeating being denied or waitlisted from a school that should have been a a match or a likely in.

That does sound really surprising and such a letdown. :weary: I’m so sorry. Also curious what her requested major was—it seems like that really determines the odds (for instance, film production is clearly extremely competitive).

Is she Catholic or Christian?

Also, has she met with anyone from the school before she applied? Demonstrated interest? Perhaps they thought LMU was her safety school and passed over her.

She wants to major in English and she likes their English program.

She didn’t get to visit or meet with the school before - she didn’t know about the college and discovered it late in her search.

No, she’s not. The school stresses that it welcomes has all types of faiths. I (Mom) went to Notre Dame, but my daughter didn’t want to apply there because it’s too conservative. Part of me wonders if they thought she would rather go to Notre Dame because mom is an alum, but she didn’t even apply.

I have no insight other than that our daughter’s profiles sound VERY similar except mine didn’t submit scores and overall her weighted GPA is a little lower. Also waitlisted to our surprise and her college advisor’s surprise. LMU was definitely more a match than a reach for ours based on other more selective schools she has already been admitted to where stats matter a lot, and her essays and ECs were strong. One thing I wonder about is whether it was deemed bad that she didn’t apply EA (though their numbers in other years don’t suggest a huge advantage one way or the other), and also I’m not sure she wrote the most spectacular “Why LMU” essay. Maybe the Jesuit thing was a stretch for my daughter in terms of sounding convincing. That said she’s already got good schools to pick from and hope more (and more affordable!) on the way. Hope the same will be true for your daughter. This stuff is hard emotionally. But something to be said for “love the schools that love you back.” LMU’s loss!

LMU says (whether or not that’s true) that demonstrated interest is not a factor. But then again they have two ED rounds and EA so that to some degree sorts interest just via application round.

According to their CDS they don’t track DI. I’m surprised.

It could be rigor - she took 6 APs but did her school offer just six or more. They want you to take a large amount of more are offered. Could be ECs as mom labeled them average.

Could also be essays or ECs. There’s no way to know. ECs are subjective - so many say how wonderful they are but they are not the reader.

Finances? - I believe they are need aware. Could be they are grabbing more and more ED.

Don’t count on it but last year 69 were admitted off the wait list. If you are full pay, you never know.

I’d stay on the WL but after doing what is needed then detach emotionally and fall in love elsewhere.

One will never know why they are not accepted unfortunately.

With stats like hers, she’ll have lots of great opportunities. One can excel at many schools so this is a small bump in the road.

We heard LMU accepts people of all faith too. But when we went on a tour, they stressed more than once that 50% of LMU is Catholic and I believe another 40% (I can’t recall if it was this exact number - but it was something surprisingly high) is Christian. That only leaves 10% for other faiths. It would make sense that LMU, a Jesuit school, would favor its Catholic and then Christian students first.

Students like your daughter with such high stats might get pushed out because LMU thinks they’re going elsewhere. Just speculation.

Our daughter was waitlisted - she’s not Catholic or Christian. Lower stats than yours but she fit or was close to the LMU profile.
