How would one / how easy is it to transfer from LSA to Art and Design? I'm going to be a freshman in the fall. I've been searching a bit but can't find the answer.

I think one of my friends entered A&D before the start of freshman year after being accepted into LSA – she’s now doing a dual degree between lsa/a&d. I’m not very familiar with the process, but I believe you will still need to send in a portfolio of your work and keep in mind you’ll have to purchase their computer bundle that includes a mac along with a bunch of other stuff. Honestly, though, I’ve heard some bad things about A&D @ umich, and unless you’re pursuing a dual degree in something else an art degree seems impractical career-wise…

care to elaborate on the bad? I would like to know.

From what I’ve heard, A&D is very credit-consuming; it’s meant to be a 5-year program by itself (so dual-majoring can be difficult). I’d recommend looking at an A&D minor so you can avoid both distribution and all the extra credits. And I agree with nubswitstubs; unless you’re using art to complement your studies, an A&D degree doesn’t do too much in the job market.

from what i’ve heard (again, this is not firsthand information), you have to spend a lot of time in studios and there are unorthodox attendance policies in certain classes.

Yea Haley I’ve definitely been considering the A&D minor. It’s just tough because not much through LSA interests me besides foreign language. I am already a year behind if I transfer so I would be wasting some valuable time on my undergrad which isn’t the best idea. I wish more A&D courses would count for LSA credit!
