LSA vs Engineering UMich Ann Arbor

I’m an in-state student, female, 4 years in the STEM Engineering program at my school with 2 years varsity sport, NHS Board (impressive because our NHS has 500+ members, creator and VP of an art club which has worked in the community and is recognized by the state, an engineering internship, 3.85 uw gpa, 34 ACT 1510 SAT (retaking for hopes of higher), and 10 AP Tests by the end of my junior year.

Many people have told me I should be fine applying/getting into COE due to doing so many engineering-related things throughout high school and many (guys?) have also told me I have a much higher chance of getting in simply because I’m a girl. Is this actually true?

Also–I planned on doing Computer Science. Would it be a safer bet to apply for LSA’s Computer Science? Is LSA truly easier to get into compared to engineering?

For you, I think they will be equal. A high stat female in-state student is will have less competition in engineering than in LS&A, but LS&A has lower stat applicants. You are a highly likely admit at either LSA or Engineering. I would apply to engineering because:

  1. CS programs are nearly identical in LSA and Engineering
  2. Engineering has better merit scholarships for women, and mentoring too.
  3. Should you decide to switch from CS, all of the engineering fields will be open to you
  4. No foreign language requirement in engineering
  5. Your EC's are more engineering oriented.
