I’m going to Umich next year and am in LSA. I have always been interested in engineering (because It pays a lot, has solid job outlook, and I’m good at math) and have always planned on transferring to the engineering school. However, I’m not quite sure if engineering is for me since I have no experience with it. Do you think I should stay in LSA to test and see what my interests are since the school is so broad, or should I try and switch to engineering? I’m afraid I’ll do the work to switch then end up not liking it. Thanks!
Depends what your major is in LSA. CS requirements are almost exact as in CoE.
If you want to transfer to CoE, you need to have all the required course taken in freshmen. Otherwise, the chance is low and it is even less likely to transfer after sophomore. So use your freshmen year to explore LSA and get ready for the transfer, then decide afterward.
If transferring into the CoE from LSA, does it usually take longer than someone who begans their first year as a CoE student?
It depends. The only required engineering classes are 100 and 101 for freshmen that I think you may take equivalent classes in LSA. Other classes are Calculus and Chemistry. If you have AP credits, you may skip the introductory classes. If you have no AP credits, then it may be a little bit hard to graduate within 4 years particularly for transfer. Nevertheless, if you do have 30+ AP credits of useful classes, you may be able to graduate in 3 to 3.5 years.
