Whoo first post!

So I've been accepted into the Liberal Studies Program for the Class of 2015 and am tracked for CAS. But after much consideration, I think I'd rather transfer into the Tisch Film & TV program. I have a bunch of questions so if anyone who has been in this situation before can post, then that'd be great.

How's the acceptance rate for internal transfers? I realize that I can apply for transfer after the first semester of my freshmen year, and if accepted start my sophomore year. I'm not looking for a % or anything, simply how selective it is. Do they give priority to internal transfers?

Will they look more at my high school career or at my freshmen year in NYU? I definitely have done many EC's related to film in high school and even placed 1st in my school's film festival so my portfolio should be fairly strong. My grades are my weak point, which is undoubtedly why I got LSP'ed in the first place.

That's all the questions I can think of right now, but I'm sure I'll be adding to this thread later on. If any accepted or current Tisch film students have a portfolio they'd be willing to share with me, then that'd be awesome. Thanks!

Apparently transfer rates into tisch are pretty bad. Tisch has a very high retention rate, so there arent many spots to go around, and people apply for transfers from all over. I believe it is easier than an external transfer, but still very tough. As for grades, I think they would look at your college grades primarily. Here is my portfolio if you want to take a look, i was accepted this year:

Anyone know if being in freshmen Explorations would increase my chances of being accepted as a transfer to Tisch film sophomore year? I’m looking at Hayden’s “NYU Show” and Founder’s “Media Revolution,” both relevant to film/TV.

Hi! I was accepted as an internal transfer for Tisch Film & TV from Steinhardt a few months ago, so I’ll try to help you out. I submitted a photo/art portfolio.

Being on an Explorations floor won’t hurt or help your chances of being accepted, but keep in mind that when you apply to Film & TV, you submit a resume to specifically showcase all the creative/film-related things you’ve done, so if you do decide to join Explorations for fun, you can always include it on your resume.

Also keep in mind that Tisch will not look at your academics when you apply—those go straight to the NYU Undergrad Admissions office. Not sure if they check your hs transcript, but of course they’ll place more emphasis on your freshman year since it’ll be a more recent indication of your academic abilities. The professors at Tisch only look at your creative portfolio. If they approve it, they let undergrad admissions know and then the admissions office has to approve of your academics before making an admissions decision
Matt is right in that transfer rates are supposedly pretty bad, but acceptances from LSP are definitely not unheard of and it’s worth a try. This is coming from a previous Steinhardt student, so I’m not totally clear about how transferring works through LSP, but I hope I helped! PM me if you have more questions :]
