LSU or ULM

I live in Louisiana and plan to stay in state. I am currently a junior. I don't really know what I want to major in yet, but it will probably be Business or something of that nature. I have a 2.8 GPA I think and a 21 ACT score so I think I could make it into either if I wanted to. There are several pros and cons to both universities. The reason I'd like to go to University of Louisiana Monroe is that a lot of my friends would be going there and it would be very close to home. I'm interested in LSU because I like the school and to be honest I kind of like the fact that it's a huge party school. I'm not saying that all I plan to do in college is party but it definately is plus. I also think that LSU would be a lot more prestigious of a degree that ULM's would be. The only downside to LSU is that I live in a really small town and it may be difficult to adjust to Baton Rouge. Another downside is that there wouldn't be many of my friends if any at LSU so I would have to adjust. I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion of the two that could assist me in deciding which college would be for the best. Thanks, Michael

Michael,
After reading your post, I was inclined to share my experience at ULM with you. I grew up in a nearby area to the University (West Monroe, LA to be exact). As I was trying to decide on a college to attend my senior year of high school, my biggest reservation in choosing ULM was that it was close to home and I didn’t know if I would get the ‘true college experience’. Well, luckily for me I chose ULM and had the best experience of my life. I wouldn’t change my decision for anything.
I graduated with a degree in Marketing in 2010 from ULM’s College of Business. Just a little fun fact - ULM’s College of Business is accredited by the International Accreditation Firm - the AACSB, which is the highest form of accreditation a College of Business can achieve. I am in the process of completing my Masters in Business Administration. You may not know it, but ULM has some extremely prestigious programs.
In addition to Marketing and my Masters program, the College of Business has some other interesting facts. We have the first Nationally Accredited Construction Management program in the country. And did you know - the Chief Imagineer of Disney World graduated from our Construction program? We also have a Risk Management and Insurance program that is 1 of 4 in the WORLD that specializes in Re-Insurance and Surplus Lines.

LSU is a wonderful school, but as a proud alum and current graduate student of ULM I encourage you to attend ULM. You will not regret your decision! If you haven’t gone on an official campus tour at ULM, you should. It’s a great place!

Sincerely,
Proud ULM graduate and former student-athlete - Seth

Thanks Seth. I’m going to go for a visit sometime in the Summer or so. I have been to the campus before though and it is nice. I definately don’t know if I could get the true college experience which as you said is something you didn’t know would happen. I’m definately interested in both schools just torn between the two. If anyone could provide more help it would be greatly appreciated.

Gonna bump this. Would really appreciate some opinions.

Lsu requires a 22 on the act. As of now its an easy decision. Test again and give yourself the option. I agree a visit is needed. I’m sure you will make frieds if you attend lsu

Take the SAT as well. And if you do well, you may get some scholarship money. I don’t know if your parents will pay all the costs of either college, so try to raise your scores so you might qualify for some merit. Financial aid generally doesn’t cover most costs for low income students without some merit aid.

Baton Rouge is not hard to adjust to. We really enjoy visiting the city when we have to drive on the I-10 to other places. You’ll like Chimes…it’s a common student and faculty hangout just north of campus.

Thanks for the help guys. I have not even thought about taking the SAT yet because I thought it would be better just to take the ACT but if I can get some more aid that would be nice. My parents will be helping out a lot with college so money isn’t really an issue though. I’ll be taking the ACT in June to try and raise my score. Would love to know some more information on the schools if anyone goes there or knows anything about them?

And also I get that I can make new friends at lsu. But I’ve also had the same friends since I was literally in like the first grade. It would definately be a lot different.

Bump for the late night cc’ers

I’ll give this one last bump as it doesn’t look like im gonna get much help on it

“I’ve also had the same friends since I was literally in like the first grade.”

IMHO, this by itself is a great reason to choose LSU (if you can get your score up). You’ll still have all your old friends, but you’ll get to broaden your horizons a little.

Thanks! I’m actually loOking for inside help though. Does anyone know of anyone on these forums who attends lsu. I’d really like to get more information on it as I kind of already know everything about ULM… Thanks
