I don’t know anything about UL Lafayette, but I’m an out-of-state student that would qualify for an OOS tuition waiver. Lafayette seems like a really cool town, but I can’t find any info on the school or students. Any former student, Louisianan, or knowledgeable person want to help me out?
I would like to know about dorm life and Greek life. And is it anyone’s first choice to go to UL Lafayette, or is LSU the only relevant University in Louisiana? Despite UL’s size and location it seems to go unnoticed. General student life information would be helpful.
Hm, what do you find “cool” about Lafayette? That’d help us
I’m from the Midwest, and the whole Cajun/French colonial influence would be totally different from my small Midwest town. I would love to experience something totally different from where I have grown up.
Would kids care that I’m not from the South? Would I think UL is a cool experience, or would I be in culture shock?
Another question: Would I feel like I’m in an intellectual environment? I know UL is not a very prestigious school, but does that matter? If I’m in the honors program and live in honors housing would I feel like I’m in an intellectual environment?
ULL is a good school. Many in LA choose it over LSU, either for its programs or because LSU has a reputation of a party school. There are many bright students there. I know one young man going there from a top high school with a 30 ACT and great grades who got a better scholarship at ULL than LSU. I can’t speak to the Greek scene though.
vistajay, thank you so much. Do you know what the social scene is like? And what do kids do in Lafayette for fun? Also, does the school’s reputation hold value outside of Louisiana? I would be fine with working in NOLA or Houston, but it would be good to have options. I will probably major in business.
I live in Iowa, so I need to be very certain it’s worth a visit.
@schuljac I know people who graduated from there and I lived not far from the university from some years growing up.
ULL has a quality campus, it’s the only college campus with a swamp (true Louisiana culture there), the overwhelming majority of the students are from 70 mile radius within the school (most from Lafayette High, Northshore High, and St. Thomas Moore High), it’s traditionally conservative, decent athletics (football & baseball are most popular there), Lafayette is a college town but very small.
Some academic programs are more well regarded than others just like any school. Not much diversity, only really southern blacks and whites (mostly white).
The greek life is no different than any other university. Full of obnoxious, shallow, and insecure students who suffer from groupthink.
