LUM Safety since Riots

I am asking for someone dear to me, she will be attending Loyola in the Fall pursuing a Masters. She is going no matter what but her family is really stressed out about the move (she is coming from Texas). Does anyone know of any problems experienced by the university during or since the riots? I keep telling them its a suburb university and is probably fine. I was hoping to get someone’s opinion who is there and who could tell us if it is dangerous at all being around or in campus because of everything. If you had any other advice that would be great! Thank you!

My D is at the undergraduate Evergreen Campus, which is in Baltimore City. The west side of campus faces Roland Park, which is one of the wealthy neighborhoods of Baltimore. It is in the Northern district, while most of the rioting occurred downtown in in the western part of the city. The Loyola campus was not affected for the most part, though the citywide curfew did apply. The graduate campuses are in different locations and I am not too familiar with them, though they were not affected by the riots either. I know it is scary when you just hear things on the news, but my D can’t wait to get back to Baltimore. The neighborhoods she frequents are generally safe. The campus itself is very safe. Loyola has its own police force in addition to the Baltimore City police.

Thank you! I’ll pass this along for sure!

Loyola did an excellent job of communicating with families during the riots. They rearranged finals schedules to accommodate the curfew, and added lots of activities on campus to keep kids close while the situation was tense. They alerted parents to everything that was going on, and communicated info necessary to successfully navigate to pick up students and avoid hot spots. We were very nervous - D was at the Orioles game the Saturday night they asked everyone to stay in the stadium due to disturbances - Mom was not happy hearing that on TV while watching the game! Even worse was watching CNN that Monday night. Thank goodness for cell phones.

Just like any city, you need to learn where to go and where not to go (hint - stay away from the direction of Johns Hopkins - it’s just a mile down the road but might as well be a different universe). As we’ve seen in the last few years, situations such as this can spring up at any time and anywhere. I have no hesitation sending D back to Loyola. Could something flare up again? Yes,it could. Do I believe Loyola will do everything possible to protect students? Yes, I do.

Thank you! I appreciate you sharing your experience with me!
