Loyola is high on my DD list but I’m concerned with its location. I also read there is seems a high rate of sex offenses there. Can anyone share info. We are going again this summer for another visit.
That’s not a school I think of at all when it comes to campus crime.
You can find a Clery report for all colleges of interest. Just Google name of school and Clery report. People really overestimate crime and colleges. These colleges have excellent campus security and kids mostly stay on campus. And if they go to off campus bars, they are pretty close to the college and the college presence is important. The police are going to do their best to keep things safe for students.
But being honest, most reported campus crimes have to do with alcohol and sexual offenses ON campus. I would look closely at those numbers. In general, kids are not getting mugged in the streets near campuses. This is generalized, but you’re more likely to find more reported crimes at colleges with a heavy Greek life influence. I don’t think Loyola Maryland fits that.
Here’s a link to Loyola Maryland’s Clery report: https://www.loyola.edu/-/media/department/public-safety/documents/asfr/2021asfsr.ashx?la=en
Note that these data in a vacuum may not tell you much. You should compare to other schools, and if you do that, you have to adjust the reported numbers by number of students. I don’t know anything about Loyola Maryland’s safety, but another potential weakness in the reporting of crime is not intuitive: some schools have a culture that discourages the reporting of crimes, especially sexual offenses. So something to research.
Btw, I am not sure that a summer visit is a great way to asses the campus culture. No kids on campus is a bit like a zoo with no animals. If possible, visit in the late summer or early fall, when students are back.
I only know what I see on the Lotola website. They are taking steps to comply with Title IX wrt victims of sex crimes.
https://sc.loyola.edu/department/title-ix/about/message-archive/progress-next-steps
There was also a change petition.
In a greater context, many colleges have similar Title IX problems lack of reporting, lack of support for victims, according to a group studying it. Can search “Know Your IX” .
Maybe can inquire with Title IX Compliance officer during visit.
We have. We are going to meet coach and hear about Business school also
IMO, Loyola is in a very nice area and I imagine the complaints from students are that there are too few bars in the neighborhood and they have to go to Towson or downtown ‘to have any fun.’
In the area are the Catholic Cathedral, a Friends school (very nice, very expensive), a lot of other private schools, Notre dame university of Md, not far from Hopkins. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods in the area.
A few years ago, there were some very long threads about sexual misconduct on college campuses, covering topics like:
- Sexual activity while drunk, leading to questions of whether consent was given, and whether any drunk participant or witness remembers the events properly.
- Sexual predators using drinking parties as cover and/or getting victims drunk (or drugged with “date rape drugs”) to commit their crimes, with drunk or drugged victims not being able to remember enough about the events.
- First semester freshwomen being the most likely to be victimized due to lack of knowledge of the above.
- Police, district attorneys, and courts handling such cases poorly.
- College and university Title IX disciplinary processes handling such cases poorly.
Overall, students at Loyola are safe from urban crimes, if the students exercise due caution. Most, but not all of, the neighbourhoods surrounding Loyola of Maryland are low-crime areas; one group of the dorms (East Side near York Road, I think) abuts a lesser neighbourhood. The school operates very frequent shuttles around the campus, and to the train station and airport.
I’m a Loyola alum and I never felt unsafe on campus. The east side of campus along York Rd. is the area to be more aware of.
Unintentional pun - or pun intended?
Loyola is adjacent to the most expensive neighborhoods in Baltimore with multi-million dollar homes.
