Luther College vs Knox College

Hi,

I have just received my acceptance letters from Knox and Luther. However, it is quiet difficult for me to choose the right school to go to. I plan on majoring in Communication and Psychology with a minor in Spanish. I also want to continue learning master in Marketing in the future.

Thank you very much for any advice!

We visited Knox several times, and thought it to be a wonderful school. A friend’s kid is very happy at Luther, and is very involved in the music program there. Both colleges offer programs in business and management. On the other hand, Knox does not have a Communications major, it does have Journalism minor so a student could probably piece together coursework in communications, without a major, if that was of interest.

Are they comparable in terms of financial packages? If one is more affordable, that would be an important consideration.

Thanks a lot for your information.

The total cost for me to go study at Luther College is 23300/year and Knox College is 22500/year ( I have subtracted my financial aid from the school’s total fee). Because Know do not have Communication so I think of choosing International Relations instead if I decide to go to Knox. However, I read some reviews on the Internet and they said that the facility and food at Knox is not good (that is the reason why I hesitate to choose Knox). I also read that Luther’s environment is so friendly that everyone love it so much, but its ranking is lower that Knox, which stopped me from pick Luther immediately.

I wouldn’t get hung up on rankings – they are both good choices, you should choose the one that meets your academic and other needs best… It sounds like Luther meets your academic goals more easily, and you are comfortable with the environment, so don’t worry about choosing it over Knox. As I said, I have not visited Luther but know one student who loves it there. I have visited Knox a few times, and think it is a hidden gem, but so is Luther!

Knox has been doing renovations/new building over the past ten years, and built a new fine arts building, is renovating the music/theater building, and has renovated the athletic facility. The dining hall was a little drab, but I know that is on the list to renovate and upgrade. My kid said the food was fine, he had no complaints on his visit. That info is more for people who might read this thread and wonder about Knox’s facilities.

Congrats on two good choices!

I know a whole bunch of Luther grads and a couple of Knox grads. You really can’t go wrong with either of these. If you like Luther better and the money works out, feel good about going there.

It would be helpful to look online at the course catalogs and see what kinds of communications classes are offered at both colleges. Look at the English department offerings as well as communications and media studies. But also remember that your academic interests could change as you move along through college.

The most important thing is that both schools will really help you with your writing and presentation skills. Liberal arts colleges are great at this. Professors will work with you one-on-one at whichever school you choose.

I have a son at Luther so let me know if you have any questions in particular. He has a friend in communications and media studies. And, in their first year, all Luther students have a class called Paideia in which they do loads of reading, analysis, and writing. My son is currently taking an economics class which has a strong “how to be persuasive” aspect which would be great for someone going into marketing.

Will you have a chance to visit both schools? What are your extra-curricular interests? How do you feel about being in a small town and rural environment? From my observations, Luther is filled with students who are more on the quiet and thoughtful side, fairly mainstream, and service oriented (many future nurses here). Music is very strong. My son, who is not a music major, still practices 3-4 hours a day.

I agree that both these schools are hidden gems and congratulations on your admission to both! I would say that Luther’s facilities are nicer. Knox is in process of investing in it’s campus infrastructure but do agree the that on surface many of the buildings could use some work and will also agree that when we visited the food was pretty dismal in the main cafeteria but a little better in the on-campus cafe.

There is a very large music culture at Luther and the student body has reputation of being ‘outdoorsy’. It is located in a very small town and is in a kind of remote location.

Knox student body has much more racial and geographic diversity than Luther. Galesburg is not a great location but there are a few coffee shops, restaurants and shops in the general neighborhood. Galesburg does have an Amtrack station that provides easy access to Chicago. I will say that the thing that impressed me the most about Knox was the genuine friendliness of everyone we met there. The admissions staff at Knox was very thorough, encouraging and professional. Knox was in the final few for my D18 but she ultimately chose a different school.

She visited Luther early on in her search but didn’t mesh with the Coach of her sport and didn’t pursue further.

Good luck on your final decision.

Parent here, doing some searches as my kid gets to his final choices. When I visited with my kids in February, I thought the food was great. Reading the most current school newspaper, I know there’s concerns about the food and they’re making changes, but of all the college visits I’ve been on, the Knox selection and quality seemed the best, so if they’re making changes to improve even that, I’m not worried about the food. I liked the vibe there.

I’ve recruited at Luther for employees, and visited Knox. I was more charmed by Luther. Liked the campus and surrounding area better.

@viviolet123 Which school did you select?

@dadof2d The OP has not been back since April.
