I am wondering if anyone can give me a different perspective regarding my hope for acceptance into NYU M.S. in global affairs.
Basically, when I was younger, I did not exactly value education and I am now paying for this attitude and perception. I received my Associates, but with a very poor GPA and with no interest with what I was doing. I can easily say that I was immature and was not prepared for college at that time.
When I went for my B.A. in Psychology, I did much better but not EXCELLENT. I only graduated with a 3.43. However, I did publish a research paper on nonviolence and presented my research in both Kyrgyzstan and Germany. During my studies, I received two class awards - one for community service and another for anthropology. I interned and developed a music and arts program at a local refugee center.
After college, I joined the peace corps and I am now serving in Kyrgyzstan. Throughout my service, I have worked with United Nations Women, working on many projects for development of gender equality in Kyrgyzstan, including both research and program coordinating. I also built a library in my village and learned the Kyrgyz language. Throughout my service, I have developed long lasting relationships with people here in Kyrgyzstan, especially with United Nations Women and other UN organizations, including the head of UN Volunteers. I am currently in the process of developing a women’s support center in my village, but I know that I won’t have time to fully develop because my service is over June 1st.
Needless to say, my situation seems to be the case of the young aimless girl with no passions, to a girl that was able to find her passions through international service. In addition, I volunteered in Guatemala years before my service in Kyrgyzstan.
I have basic knowledge of Spanish, Intermediate high level in Kyrgyz and fluent in English.
What do you think my chances are for acceptance into this program? Basically, what worries me is the poor poor GPA when I first came out of high school.
