just wondering if anyone here has taken the m&t summer program at penn. if so how was it, wat did u like/didnt like, does it really have NO effect on entrance to penn, and would u do it again if u could?

also, if anyone else is applying or thinking of applying, let me no where ur from and wat ur thoughts on the program are

anyone interested or planning on applying...and does anyone the acceptance rates to the summer program. thanks...bump

on the website, they say more than half gets in (for all..dont konw about MT)

My friend went to that program and he said it was the WORST experience of his life. I did the biomedical research program and i had one of the best times of my life. He said that it was test after test, weird kids (yeah it varies), and just no free time. For biomedical research, it was laid back and so freaking awesome.

Yeah, I liked it.

I wasn't going to say anything otherwise, but I guess I'm one of the more qualified sources. I've worked with the M&TSI crew, spoken often with its leaders, and judged final projects at the end of the program. Some observations:

1) The admissions rate is pretty high. Not that many people apply, because a lot of people don't know about the program. There's very little financial aid available - it's a summer camp, not college.

2) It will not affect your chances of admission to Penn. It will, however, help you decide whether you want to apply to M&T, and if you want to study business and engineering in college. You may find that this makes you a better applicant to Penn and many other schools. (Most HS students have no idea what Engineering or Business is)

3) It's an extremely busy and active program. If you want to sit back and chill out during the summer, it's not for you. You get your money's worth - it's the equivalent of 2 college classes in the course of 3 weeks. You're expected to read and write at a very quick pace, and your time will be full with activity. There are also many field-trips during the program that offer unique opportunities but may wear you out. All that said, previous participants have commented on the hectic scheduling and this is a concern for the future of the program.

If there are more specific questions, feel free to post them. (Again, I was not personally in the program but I've watched it, tried to be a TA for it, and spoken often with its leaders about it.)

thanks...thats very helpful

also, i know that you mentioned it was a really hectic schedule and an intense workload, but is the grading lenient at all or is it as if it was a college course with the median at a 3.0

and do you think any type of business or engineering internship will do the same in applying to business schools (esp. penn)

Working an internship is better than sitting on your butt all summer, but it won't really give you an accurate feel for what Penn wharton/seas is like. (Especially in business - unless you intern on wall st., it's not at all what business school is like). M&TSI is a taste of business and engineering classes. Odds are in an internship you'll be doing very applied, very practical stuff which is valid for a career in those areas but doesn't reflect what a degree is like.

You do know that the grades don't matter, right?
From the site: What does ‘for-credit’ mean?
M&TSI students who successfully complete the program will earn one Penn credit unit (equivalent to one college course). Typically, this credit has been used at Penn and other institutions as a technical elective or general elective, respectably. If you have questions about how this credit will transfer to a specific college or university, please contact the Registrar’s Office of that institution.

That's just one "general" credit. Think of it as pass/fail.

ok thanks for clarifying...i didn't know that a general credit was pass/fail

and i guess i have two more questions...1) can going there this summer help you with a why penn essay and doesn't it show interest in the school and 2) are u able to get to know any of the professors well enough that they would be willing to write a rec for you in the future

thanks so much...and all of your information has really been helpful

Demonstrated interest doesn't mean much in the world of college admissions (you demonstrate interest with a visit to campus and good essays. That's about it). It will help you write a better Why Penn essay, but doing the program to improve your chances of admission only is a waste of your time and money.

You won't get to know the professors that well. In college, you have to really know a professor well (much better than in HS) to get recommendations, because they will be honest in their letters. 3 weeks just isn't enough time, and I will say that most actual M&T students in 4 years around those specific professors won't know them well enough to ask for recommendations. (Dr. Hamilton knows who I am, and knows my personality, but I don't know him well enough for a rec)

It has no bearing. It should be something you participate in only if you have genuine interest and wish to get a taste for things.

This isn't a quote about the M&T summer program but it's about LBW, which falls under the same umbrella with respect to these programs (from Tiffany Fujioka):

jcll2002,

how do you apply for the biomedical research program?
is that offered at penn itself?
could you send me the website for it
thanks,

yea jcl post it here

i was just notified that i was accepted. i'm waiting to hear from one other program and was just wondering if anyone else got accepted/denied, etc.

i'm also still deciding if i want to go. i would much rather go to the other program i applied to, LEAD, but would love to stay on Penn's campus for a few weeks. so maybe ill get in to Wharton's LEAD program or maybe i can try to do both (LEAD at UVA or Duke and MT at Penn).

LEAD's for "minorities" right? If so (then it's what I'm thinking of), you'll probably get more out of that, at least at Wharton.

yes it is mattwonder, and that is what i think too. if i get into the Wharton one i will do it in a second. however, i would love to spend time on Penn's campus so if i could do both, that would work out real well (duke and uva are the only Lead programs which end on time in order to try to make them both work)

Sorry for bumping this thread, however, I have a question for mattwonder (or anyone else who is involved with the program this year)

Supposedly, 250 kids have applied already, and, according to a more recent thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1093918-m-tsi.html), they’ve already filled the program (however, someone said that they got in a month after the first person said that the program was full).

Does anyone know if any applications are still being reviewed, or is everyone who applied close to the deadline being put on a waiting list?

I attended M&TSI in 2010. It was a great experience. I don’t know the acceptance rate, but all the kids there were pretty smart. Its a very busy program as others have mentioned, but still a lot of fun.
I do believe that the program does not affect admission into Penn, but many of the students do get into Penn/other ivys/stanford/mit.
I would definitely recommend the program.

I just received my acceptance letter yesterday.
I sent in my application on March 15th if that’s any help.
If you still haven’t received a response, you should contact the office. That’s what I did.
Best of luck!
