I’ve been lookin at the degree plan for MechE and I have AP credits for essentially all the freshman year courses except for M408D but M408D happens to be prerequisite for most of the sophomore courses like Statics and Thermodynamics. So I am thinking of taking Calc 3 over the summer at community college but that credit would transfer over as M408M not M408D. Would M408D and M408M be substitutable when coupled with my BC Calc credit?
I found a second option of this M427L-AP Honors course (Adv. Calc for Apps 2) whose only prerequisite is getting a 5 on BC exam. Since this course is 2 levels beyond M408D, would enrollment in it make me eligible for taking the courses that have M408D as prerequisites?
Only way to be sure is to talk to an advisor in the department.
This page explains just about anything you’d need to know about calculus transfer credit at UT Austin: http://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/transfer-resources/common-credit-issues/calculus/ .
For math and engineering majors UT accelerates the typical Calculus I, II and III into M408C and M408D. Differential Equations is M427J. Community colleges in Texas do the normal Calculus I, II and III so you have to make sure that the Calculus III will count. I had a problem getting into Physics at my local CC this summer. Even though I had M408C, M408D and completed M427J this past spring the UT math numbering system didn’t match the CC numbering system and they said I needed Calculus II before enrolling in Physics.
