Hi, I’m currently enrolled as a freshman for the fall semester. I will be pursuing a BSA in Biochemistry and the requirements for the math portion is either M408C or M408N/S. Thanks to AP credit, I only have to take 408S. However, I can’t seem to decide between the two classes.
I want to take 408C because the syllabus looks like it has content I have already learned and the subject of calculus will be fresh in my mind for the fall. On the other hand, I want to take 408S because it’s at a slower pace and I don’t want to waste my AP credit. Additionally, 408S in the fall won’t work because it interferes with my required UGS class. I am not entirely sure which one to pick.
Any help with this predicament would be appreciated. Thank you!

Here is a number list of my thoughts:
- UGS registration was a giant luck of the draw. Many UGS classes closed within minutes. Since you already have UGS registered, I would keep it. However, many freshman have completed UGS in the Spring.
- Assuming you’re taking Calculus in the fall, 408C sounds reasonable due to your belief it has content you have already learned and that you already looked at the syllabus. I’ve had AP BC friends whom told me that the pacing was similar for a month or two in 408C.
- Yes, 408S is slower pace and will go much more in-depth in proofs of integrals. If you are to believe making an higher grade in 408S than 408C will be more likely, then go for it. Some freshmen I’ve talked to held the belief a slower pace Calculus course would lead to more time spent on other subjects they would have difficulty in (ex: i’m better at math than biology).
- Overall, my stance is keep UGS and take 408C. Though, I have heard of freshmen claiming credit for calculus and having no math class their fall semester then taking another math class in the Spring semester.
