American student here. KCL is the more obvious choice. Is Aberystwyth really that well regarded in International Politics? Aber was never once mentioned to me by undergraduate politics professors.
I am having a difficult time figuring out which offer to accept. Durham and KCLs courses interest me the most. I believe what it comes down to most are my employment prospects upon graduating. How well known are these departments on an international level? I do not plan on pursuing my PhD.
Why is KCL the more obvious choice? Durham is (by some margin) the highest ranked of the 4 (and is also a super educational experience). Do you mean b/c it is in London, either for the adventure and/or for the presumably better speakers, contacts etc?
Employment prospects in the UK*? Durham or KCL Outside the UK? none of them are going to ring any bells. Maybe KCL b/c people will feel that they have heard of it, but I wouldn’t put much weight on it. In fact, Durham is
Employment prospects in what area of Intl Pol? do any of the programs have an emphasis on that area? Have profs who are strong in that area? Do you already have work experience in that area?
W/out knowing anything about desired location for employment, area of interest, work experience, language abilities, etc it is impossible to say much about your employment prospects with a degree from any of them.
Imo go with the program that looks the most interesting to you.
*as an American employment prospects in the UK are pretty poor
Thank you for your response. My apologies for a very vague description of my postgraduate intentions. To clarify, I feel that KCL is the more obvious choice in regards to networking and internship opportunities in London. Although rankings are not everything, KCLs Politics/ War and Conflict Studies department ranks higher than those of Durham and Aberystwyth in the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
I do have work experience in the field of International Relations. I graduated in 2015 with two BAs in Political Science and Business Administration. I’ve just completed my tour with the US Department of State working in development in Peru for the past two years. To further clarify, I would hope to gain employment in diplomacy, political analysis (think tanks), or in the NGO sector. I am very open to working in the UK/Europe after graduating with an MA or even Latin America or North America. I do speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese (Brazil).
I would like to be sure that I am accepting the offer that will provide me with the most value for my money and a degree with the most international flexibility/ weight when entering the job market.
Thanks for the added info- which makes a big difference. KCL War College is a whole other thing, especially in the context of your experience. I have a little familiarity with the program, and it is super. With your background, that is the one I would pick.
Obviously, you would be experienced enough to know that getting employment in the UK/Europe or Latin America as a non-national is problematic, but your combination could get you into a trans-national organization.
