MA Resident: Paying In-State Tuition at an Out-of-State School

hi all,

i am currently a rising sophomore at new college of florida, florida's public honor's college. however, before i left for school i was a lifelong resident of massachusetts and my family still lives there. when i was applying to colleges i applied to umass amherst and was accepted into their honor's college. at new college i plan to major in a self-designed program in united states studies, something that is not offered at umass.

i was talking to an acquaintance recently, and she mentioned that her friend (who goes to a public university in maine) majored in something not offered through the public university system in ma, and therefore qualified for ma in-state tuition at his out-of-state university. i have since tried to find some documentation about this program and how to qualify, but i haven't really been able to turn up anything.

do any of you have any info about this, or suggestions of where i could research to learn more?

Tuition Exchange Programs are described in the Financial Aid FAQ, which can be found as a sticky at the top of the forum.

You don’t actually pay the in-state rate, but there is a substantial discount compared to the out-of-state rate.

Here’s the [program brochure](http://www.nebhe.org/wp-content/uploads/2013-14-TuitionBreak_for_Massachusetts_Residents.pdf) for Mass residents.

Massachusetts does not participate with Florida with regards to reduced tuition for courses of study it does not offer. You would have to attend a college that has an agreement with Massachusetts. I do not believe Florida does.

The New England Exchange is for other states in New England only, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire.

If you attend college in Florida at a public university, you will be paying the out of state costs.
