Which is better for college?

Mac, though there is also a computer forum where I’m sure this has been debated.

mac, obviously. *** kind of debate is this

If you’re on a budget, a PC. If you buy a mac, you’re essentially paying $1000+ so you can write essays, send emails, and surf the internet.

Get a stable machine with XP or Win7 (or get one with none at all and save even more money, and just use a Linux distro). If Microsoft Word, PPT etc. don’t come installed, download OpenOffice. Use a firewall (I use Comodo), antivirus (AVG), and antispyware (Seek & Destroy). Scan websites and downloads with trusted online scanners (Anubis, NoVirusThanks, VirusTotal), if need be.

If you know anything about computers (and not just how to operate user interfaces, which is essentially the most a Mac allows you to do), PCs are economically much more ideal.

I’m not sure how long the hardware for a Mac holds up over the years compared to PCs, so I can’t comment here.

I can’t imagine spending the money for a mac just to write essays and play on facebook. If I required more from my computer then a mac might be worth the investment, but not for my needs.

I won’t go into a whole debate but I think people should get a PC. Mac is just an inferior hardware running a highly aesthetic operating system. It’s user friendly and flashy and all but think about the hassle of converting files into Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, etc files to turn stuff in to your professors.

The correct answer is: It doesn’t really matter. You’ll survive using either one.

Personally I prefer PC’s. There’s nothing a Mac can do that a PC can’t, except for looking good. So if design is the most important factor for you, get a Mac. I prefer having a much broader native selection of sofware (without using emulators or virtual machines) and not having to deal with compatibility issues, so I vote for PC.

PCs are cheaper. I kinda like OS X, having used boring XP for five years before.

I’m pretty damn good with computers, I don’t download stuff from sketchy sites, I run antivirus and anti spyware programs. Yet one day my Vista PC decided to keep on giving me the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) every time I logged in, even in Safe Mode. Just eight hours before, the computer started up fine and all I did was play a video game for a bit. Shut it down, then the next day it was doing the BSOD thing.

That’s when I was thankful I had my MacBook Pro… I haven’t had anything like that happen.

If aesthetics aren’t important, go PC. I use PCs, but my parents just got a new Mac and I must say I’m jealous. Macs I think are more pleasurable to use for tasks. However, for most people, either will do what you need them to do. If you were going to need one or the other for something specialized, you would probably already know that.

Macs are fun while they last, but die too early. My Macbook killed itself in less than 2 years. A few years before its suicide, the battery died so I had to keep it plugged in all of the time to use it. The battery ALWAYS dies on Macs. This, coupled with the fact that I have also had 2 iPods commit suicide in the past 2-3 years, leads me to believe that Apple’s hardware durability leaves quite a bit to be desired. I have not had nearly the same troubles with PCs, which are also less costly and much more versatile to boot. In summary, based on my experience, I would recommend you get a PC.

What are you majoring in? I know for business, PC is a lot more useful, whereas for video editing Mac is a lot more useful.

PC. Mac sucks.

Why would I pay $1300 for a poor Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR2 ram, and a 150 gb hard drive?

For $1300 I could get a Core i7 processor, 6 or 8 gb ddr3 ram, and a 250 ssd or 1 tb hdd.

Screw Mac. Mac is a poor excuse for people who don’t know how to use computers.

^ Exactly. Core i7 Processors ftw.

PC.
A Mac is all glitz and little substance.

I own a Mac, but only because I absolutely can’t stand Vista or Windows 7. I hate the operating interface.

Isn’t this what the college computer thread is for? I mean, do we REALLY need another one of these threads???

i just got a mac for my 18th and i love it. i haven’t had any problems with it compared to how many times i had to clear my PC. the battery life isn’t the greatest but i love my mac

This is one thing that will never be a problem…why wouldn’t you just create your files in Word, Powerpoint etc? ;)

Personally, I enjoy my MacBook Pro’s 7-hour battery life, sleek interface, and overall fast and non-glitchy performance. However - money is a serious, serious concern and shouldn’t be overlooked. Be sure that you really want to spend the extra money for the extra quality, which may not be important to you if you’re not going into graphic design or something. Macs are not for everyone, and I’d be the last person to force them on somebody who didn’t really love them.

Stick to a PC, its cheaper!

Macs are only “better” if you like the operating system. It doesn’t get as many viruses but it also has much less potential than a pc unless you are into design. Did I mention it’s overpriced? For the price of a mac, you could buy a pc with twice the computing power. Don’t fall for the aesthetics and kiss Apple’s ass. I repeat, only go for the mac if you like the operating system or if you are in a designing field.
