Macalester 2010

so... is anyone here? I think it'd be neat to get a sampling of where everyone is from, so I'll start out...

My name is Laurel, and I'm from a suburb of Chicago and will probably major in biochemistry. Anyone else?

Jamie, from a Portland,OR suburb, trying to resist the pressure to choose a major right now (though I'll probably double with IS + Political Science or French). Is it irresponsible for me just to want to take interesting classes for my first semester and not worry about major reqs....? Oh yeah, my twin sister Krista will also be in the 2010 class.

wow, a twin sister going to the same college? That's awesome! Anyway, I've started a forum for the mac 2010 people... it's here: <a href="http://www.macalester2010.tk%5B/url%5D">http://www.macalester2010.tk</a>. Please tell any other 2010ers about it! thanks.

I'm Andy from Binghamton, Ny (it's Upstate). I'm going to Macalester as well and i am planning on political science. It doesn't seem like your thread got very far, but i hope this helps. i too am looking fora dialouge with the other members of 2010 since Facebook is not an option and we don't get our room assignments until early August. Not to mention our late orientation. I'm really excited for Mac and the twin cities, but i have absolutely no idea about the campus; i've never seen mac nor have i been within 500 miles of it in my entire life. If anyone has an information on it i would grealty appreciate any information.

The campus is tiny compared to other schools (53 acres), but there are three quad areas with grass and it's nice having all the buildings fairly close together. There's a mixture of beautiful and ugly buildings, and they're all brick. The neighborhood around Mac is beautiful: victorian houses and the Mississippi just a mile away.
One of the problems with Mac you'll encounter is that the tech department is about five years behind the times, so they do stuff like don't give you your e-mail accounts just because. I don't know if it'll work, but your e-mail accounts may be set up with passwords that you don't know. Your usernames will be your first initial and your last name for sure. Last year passwords were reset to everyone's username and the last four digits of their social security number. So John Smith is:
username: jsmith
password: jsmith9267
The password could also be some combo of your birthday (like 0488, 488, 041988, etc). The e-mail site is:
ocs.macalester.edu
If you guys are bored, you could play around and see if you come up with the code and then share it with everyone.

I heard that the tech dpt was a little outdated, but that for a small campus it works. The area also sounds really nice i can't wait to see it! How far are the cities and the other schools? i read that mac students tend not to interact much with other schools but i can't figure out how far they are on google maps.

oh ocs. A pioneer in software technology, renegger on grants to Harvard and producer of crappy, unstable email servers that can't even service 2000 accounts for more than 3 days straight. Thanks Oracle. :) <- sarcastic smile ..though things have gotten better. Ted Fines told me why, but I didn't take the time to read his 57 weekly emails to know why.

On another note, its true that Mac kids tend not to interact with kids from other schools, even tho St Thomas is an easy 1.5 mile walk, and Hamline, St. Kate's the U of Minn, & a few others are close. Most people are content enough with their Mac friends and the buses don't exactly make it easy without a car.

sorry the school is so sad about email addresses. Your accounts will most likely be activated in mid august, you can check on the school's homepage and use the directory. if your name appears, your account is most likely activated. otherwise you can try your username & password combos Macstudent recommened. every domestic student i know was the SS number, i dont know about internationals.

Hi guys, my name is Zack, i'm from RI ( very far away from St. Paul)and will be attending Mac next year. I'm really psyched ( i hear we get free tee shirts at orientation) and just wanted to get in touch with some of my fellow classmates. I havn't really had any contact with the class of 2010 and was hoping to talk about majors/St. Paul ect ect.. I'll be majoring in Biology and am possibly interested in med school but who knows..I hear St. Paul is a pretty hip city with some good clubs/resturants and cultural attractions so it should be cool! peace and hit me up with a reply about your plans and/or expectations for Mac.
p.s. it's good to see that there is a considerable East Coast constituancy attending!!

hi, I'm Anne from Pittsburgh, PA. I'm technically undecided on what I'm majoring, but leaning toward history. Just wanted to let everyone know that there's now a Mac facebook group for our class, the link is: <a href="http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2205081886%5B/url%5D">http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2205081886</a></p>

looking forward to seeing everyone in September!

is anyone attending the allumni open house thing in Boston for eastcoasters? I got somehting about it in the mail, it's like the August 6th

No, sorry. Boston's a 12/13 hour drive from me, a bit too far of a haul. After all, I have that 14-16 hour drive to look forward to driving to Mac in Sept!

I'm Amia, I from Philadelphia, I'm planning on double majoring In Poli Sci and American Studies. I never really traveled before and Macalester is a long way from home. I looking foward to meeting all of you and hope I'll have a great time

hey class of 10, I just dropped by to offer the sorry news that you will have to wait until orientation to access your .edu accounts at mac. incoming freshmen dont have the same standard password presets as in previous years.
and at the rate the email upgrade is going, there might not be any working emial by the time i graduate. hahaha.
oh man, cracks me up.

anywhoo, im from philly, class of 09, any questions about mac, id love to help.
