We did not get any merit money either, but were not really expecting anything (although it would have been nice!)
Perhaps posting stats would be helpful for those trying to gauge admissions and scholarships. I think some who are reporting scholarships have very high stats…
My S had a comparatively low GPA (3.6 UW / 4.5 W), 1420 SAT, 6 AP’s (all 4’s so far), mediocre ECs, but good essays IMO. I’m not sure I’d go as far as calling Mac a reach school, but we were definitely pleasantly surprised with the EA acceptance!
why is macalester 75k compared to other urban private schools that are like 55k like gw? knowing this, even with the aid plus fafsa it’s not worth it for something that’s not an ivy or something
Macalester tuition for 2021-2022 is listed as $60,288 and GWU tuition for 2021-2022 is listed as $59,780, so they are really about the same. Edited to add: Just dug a little deeper and GWU (main campus) room and board is $15,440, whereas Mac room and board is $13,542. So actually Mac ends up slightly less expensive. I have a student at another private university (mid-sized) and pay more than either Mac or GWU. It is crazy!
thanks so much, i’m also assuming that just any spending costs at mac like living off campus are less than gw in general because dc is so expensive, so yeah. i applied rd to gw but i’m a legacy so i think i’ll be fine, but if i came down to it i guess i would pick macalester over gw for finances
D22 has a 3.93 UW, 4.4W GPA, 1470 SAT, 11 APs, good ECs (she founded an anti racism book club, serves on our county’s youth commission for education equity, is the News editor for the paper, does theater, plays 3 instruments, no sports). Strong writer, good essays. She got the 22k.
Congratulations to those who were accepted!!
If you are still waiting to hear from other schools, best of luck to you!! Waiting is painful, hang in there! (I hope everybody will decide to come to Mac…)
A quick question. I did not find anywhere in Mac’s calendar or schedule, but is there an accepted students week in April for those students who have not visited Macalester before deciding on May 1st, or for the committed students who still want to revisit anyway? Did you have this last year, maybe it might have been online visit?
If such a week does exist, it didn’t take place last year-- we booked an outdoor tour (in accordance with COVID rules) and visited on our own time. However, I did go to an accepted students day on Zoom in Jan/Feb, which was pretty informational-- hopefully they’ll offer similar sessions this year seeing as the circumstances are (unfortunately!) similar.
Thanks!! I asked you this question because I wasn’t sure if we should buy airplane tickets for spring. Well, Macalester website mentioned that there will be no building visits, so even if we personally visit, we won’t see a lot. Thanks!!
Thank you👍! In the meantime, we just purchased the airplane tickets for this summer move-in and orientation.
I will have my son keep an eye on the email from school, but February is around the corner. I don’t think they will have an in-person admitted student event in February.
Macalester FA was sent out this a.m. I was surprised to see about grants in addition to the 22K merit. On the flip side, I read that the tuition alone is 62K for 2022-23. Plus 14K for room and board.
Did people feel that financial aid was more or less than expected? A lot of people are saying they got less than the NPC indicated. It’s a shame because Mac was generous for most of us '25ers… must be a COVID economy issue. I will say that appealing is very much an option!
