Macalester College Early Decision for Fall 2022 Admission

I mean, I won’t argue with the fact that they are probably ED, however, I will say that it boldly states in the bio “do not have to be committed to Macalester, just admitted.”

That is an unofficial account that looks like it was started by a high schooler. Has two kids on it.

I got my EA acceptance around 3 PM Eastern last year. Can’t comment on this year’s schedule obviously.

Also, I started the Instagram account. It is unofficial. I do not speak for the institution, and obviously have no way of proving who got accepted or how, but I am 99% sure everyone posted so far was accepted ED. Mac is not one of those schools that releases EA gradually in my experience from last year.

I read that last year, shortly before decisions were released, accepted students saw a survey pop up in their portal within the list of items submitted. Anyone seeing anything yet this year?

I don’t know what survey you are talking about, but I don’t remember my son received it in the portal this year. Funny they asked accepted students to join the class of 2026 group in Facebook, but only 4 or 5 kids posted. Both my sons don’t do Facebook. However, my younger one just joined. They don’t like to upload anything. I think Discord is gaining popularity initially by the gamers’ community, but now majority kids use Discord more than Facebook. I think parents use Facebook, but kids don’t use it as much.

Agreed. I only used the Facebook last year in order to gain the link to a class of 2025 discord-- hopefully someone will make one for c/o '26 as well!

December 2020 - Macalester had just over 2800 students apply EA (the first year it was offered)

December 2021 - Macalester had just over 3100 students apply EA.

Wow!! That’s incredible! I wonder about acceptance rates.

Just wanted to say thanks to you @isla701! Your willingness to come back here and share your experience was really helpful in giving us a better view into Mac. My daughter started to be able to picture herself at Mac because of your experience, and she started off not knowing much more than “a liberal arts school in a city.”

Absolutely! I figured I’d come and share because I was not the conventional Mac applicant in a few ways (came from dual enrollment at a community college, from the South, accepted to other good LACs on the East coast, etc). I spent months trying to convince myself that I was being too “impulsive” in my desire to go to Mac, and I want to help others get more clarification!

Please feel free to DM me if your daughter or anyone else’s kid wants to talk directly-- I have all the usual teenage communication channels!

Daughter was accepted Early Action with $23k DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarship!
4.0 UWGPA, no test scores, very good extra-curriculars (given the pandemic), and great essays.
Very proud of her!

While we are grateful, it seems like everyone got the 22k. Is it just the same for everybody? Do they ever give more or less than this?

Around 22k is the max on merit. They can give lower merit scholarships, or more $ in the form of need.

Cost of Attendance is $75k, so $18-22k/merit is still $53k to $57k/year. People kept telling us to not write off privates, but compared to our flagship state school it’s overwhelming.
