Macalester v. Carleton v. Colgate

I've narrowed down my choices to these three schools and now I'm stuck. I like all three schools equally and they all gave me amazing fin. aid (Colgate more so than Mac & Carl).

Mac was initially my number one but now I don't know. When I toured it, I really really liked the overall feeling. The students were nice and the environment was laid-back, which was a definite plus. However, it's way too close to home (I'm a 20 min drive). And I really did not like the food that much (sounds kind of lame, but I'll probably be eating it for 4 yrs).

I wasn't overly enthusiastic about Carleton. Even though I'm a Minnesotan, winter has never really been my thing; when I toured in January, the campus seemed a little dull. It seemed there wasn't much going on. I like the school, and the people are very nice and laid-back as well. Plus, I liked their food. :D But because the school runs on trimesters, I don't know if I can adjust well to it.

I haven't had the chance to visit Colgate, but my friend's brother goes there and he loves it; heck even she loves the school. The only reason she didn't apply was because he was already there. From all the brochures they've sent me, I can definitely imagine myself there. Plus, it'd be awesome to be a part of the Class of 2013. The only thing holding me back is that it's so far away from MN. My parents are hesitant in letting me go because they won't be there to help if something should happen. And with money being an issue, we can't afford to fly me back and forth for breaks, etc. I guess I'm also worried about Colgate not being as diverse as I'd like it to be.

I definitely need some help deciding here. I'd love to hear what others have to say about these schools. What are some pros/cons you have? Anything interesting to point out, to add?

Sounds like Colgate is the school for you. Don’t go to Mac/Carleton if you don’t like winter.

Have you make some trial itineraries on Travelocity to see what airfares might be? I think it is good to go to another region but make sure the airfares won’t kill you.

Obviously you need to do what you can financially. But Colgate sounds like the best option. Try to visit it.

Although it might be hard to convince your parents, they should know there are many students attending from distant places. Colgate will accommodate what needs to be done for breaks and emergencies.

Colgate gets very cold in the winter as well. Macalester is in a big city at least, and is a little more diverse than the other two.

I think you need to visit Colgate. The environment there is very different from Mac and Carleton; it may not be what you are idealizing it as.

If diversity is important to you, I think you will like Macalester more than Colgate.

I think Macalester would be the best of the three for you.
