Nice to hear! For my daughter, it was also the only LAC with Greek life, which was a bit of a concern at first, but it was dispelled during our visit. Because we visited during the official Junior Day, we had three tours on that day :): the generic tour, the English tour, and the arts tour (which only had two people, so it was almost private). My daughter is also very artsy, and it was clear from the arts tour how many opportunities for the arts they had and that there were plenty of theater performances happening. My favorite moment during that tour was when we asked our tour guide about Greek life, and he said that it’s not your traditional Greek life; in fact, he said, his fraternity is all about opposing toxic masculinity. We thought, OK, she could see herself there.
We took the arts tour, which was terrific. The art studios and theaters were impressive. IIRC Paul Newman, Kenyon ‘49, returned to campus to direct the first play put on in the new theater starring then Kenyon student, Allison Janney, class of ‘82–wow! This thread reminded me how much we all loved Kenyon.
Greek life at Kenyon College is not the same as at large universities; Greek life at Kenyon College is inclusive.
There are other activities, but a small school (regardless of name), in a rural, cold weather region will have lots of parties/social events which include alcohol.
Kenyon College has put forth admirable efforts to curb drinking & should be commended.
Gorgeous campus with a small enrollment of just under 1,700 students.
Parents need to share with their young adult students the importance of either avoiding alcohol or how to minimize its effects–such as drinking a bottle of water after a few drinks. This applies to students at any college or university regardless of size or location.
Encourage your child to use the gym facilities to exercise as well as to let him or her know that part of the responsibility of living away from home is to engage in healthy activities which do not involve any type of substance use. May sound corny, but kids need to hear this type of advice from their parents.
