Macaulay Honors vs. regular CUNY Hunter?

Now that CUNY tuition is free, what is the draw of being a past of the Macaulay Honors College? My daughter made it into Brooklyn for Macaulay, but she also got into Hunter, City and Brooklyn regular.

Macaulay is coming across as very restrictive in her choice of courses, and they denied her APs based on a random requirement that makes no sense. (She got 4s on her APs, but they require Macaulay students to get a 5 to get credit for the SAME COURSE that regular students can get AP credit for with only a 4.) So she loses 2 courses because of that.

She had to put a Macaulay session class in her schedule for 3 hours a week, which cut down on the classes she can take towards to requirements. Looking at her plan for the next 4 year, it’s cutting it close whether she’ll get all of the required classes for her major, her minor, and the Macaulay requirements in time to graduate.

They sold us on free tuition, a free computer deal, a great old brownstone building in the city (which she apparently does NOT have any classes in), and a card that entitles her to free cultural events in the city. I honestly don’t know when she’ll have time for anything besides school and travel to Brooklyn.

Can someone share a reason that Macaulay is worth this trouble? Or should I send her to Hunter?

Hi do you mind please sharing your daughter’s stats? I’m sorry I don’t have that much experience to tell you. Why doesn’t your daughter get to take classes in the brownstone? I thought mandatory seminars take place there. So do you recommend Brooklyn MHC?

Some events happen at the Brownstone but the Macaulay classes are at the respective colleges. SAT was 1480. GPA 4.0. Are you looking to switch from Hunter to Brooklyn?

As for “free tuition” at CUNY & SUNY, does your family qualify for the Excelsior scholarship? It has quite a few restrictions, and you need to read the fine print. Where the Excelsior scholarship is based on need, Macaulay’s tuition scholarship is based on merit.

My D turned Macaulay at Hunter down for the same reasons you mentioned. She was also accepted at Lehman and City College but they don’t offer Direct Nursing which is her major. She’s heading to Pace Lienhard School of Nursing in PV. Not only did they give her full scholarship in their honors program they accepted all the APs she scored 4 or better. Frankly I was confused about Macaulay Honors. I don’t know why I thought that after getting accepted to the program you chose which CUNY to attend.

Macaulay Honors College is more respected and highly valued.

@Daisy192 hi, I came across this post while I was researching Pace and Macaulay. Could you possibly share your D’s stats?
