Main benefits of taking Calc senior??

I’m planning to major in business, and am currently taking Algebra 2 in Junior year. I heard that many re-take calculus in college. Therefore is it really worth it to work much harder than you have to in order to take Calc in senior year?

All I know is that calculus is one of the most important prerequisites to a business major. If I were you I would do a bit more research about specific colleges you are thinking of applying to, because I’m sure they all have different opinions about this. Good luck!

You generally need to take precalculus before calculus. So you can take precalculus in 12th grade and calculus in college. As a business major, you can take an easier calculus for business majors at most colleges, unless you want to go into a more quantitative subarea.

If you are looking at more competitive programs/unis, then you can assume your peers would have calc as a senior. What unis are you think of applying to? Top 50 is a bit vague, business even vaguer.

What’s your grade in algebra2?
Do you think you’ll be recommended for Precalculus honors or precalculus accelerated?
You can start with calculus for business in college.
Some colleges even have Precalculus as the default fiest math class for their business majors (St Louis University, Millersville… )

It is much easier to do well in calculus in college if you have taken it before.

Obviously, repeating what you already know makes it easier to get a good grade.

But isn’t the point of college to learn something new?

That fact is that depending on the high school and the colleges it may NOT be repeating what you already know…

Thanks for the replies.

  • I find Algebra 2 not too challenging (except for probability) and have A’s in the first semester.
  • Right now I have a B due to getting a C on a probability test, but I’m confident I can get it back up.
  • I don’t think my teacher would think about recommending anyone. Summer school is coming up however - so is it worth it to take Pre-calc (which I really wouldn’t want to do unless beneficial).
  • Planning to enroll in public uni, website says ‘Brief Calculus’ required

Look up the prerequisites for “brief calculus”. Most likely, it will have precalculus or college algebra (which is typically precalculus without trigonometry) as a prerequisite.

I just checked and you are right. Prerequisites are CA or Pre-Calc. All students will need to take math placements exams even if they have AP math credits.

Stick to taking precalculus during the year
