major for pre-med students

hi guys,
i wanted to ask something to all of you who want to go to med school. what are u guys choosing as your major for undergrad??

I'm double majoring in math and physics.

sociology!

ya i actually have a ques about this...if i choose to major in business (finance and accounting) will i even be able to take medical school pre-reqs the first year?! I know at villanova you cant cause they make your schedule.

I've been wondering about this also...is it okay for me to major in psychology instead of biology??

As long as you take all the pre-reqs for med school, your major doesn't matter one bit.

bio and spanish and maybe a minor in stats if i can handle it

Is psychology like the easiest and most appealing (in the sense that it is a science-pertinent major and can be useful in med school) when applying to med school? I feel like its the major that students who do not want to get a low GPA decide to take?

There is no such thing as a major that can be useful in med school per se, because everyone takes the same classes.

I reapeat: Major in what you want to study.

yup i second that, although i suggest you choose a major u enjoy, but that isnt too time consuming itself, your pre-med classes will be overwhelming enough.

There's only one 'a' in repeat, and I'm officially dumb.

Oh well, even Homer sometimes nods.

But I know a lot of top medical schools want some form of scientific research. How would I do that without a hard science major?

I don't know about that. MD/PhD programs certainly want research, but just regular MD programs? I've heard of people who got into Harvard Medical School who majored in humanities. It doesn't seem to me that they would have had a whole lot of science research.

Obviously science research helps, but I don't know that it helps more than any other major health-related EC. For example, I know one girl who got into Harvard Medical School with a non-science major, but who spent a lot of time in Africa working with NGO's in setting up medical clinics and public health infrastructure.

I have a friend at UCLA med who did research on epidemiology through the poli sci dept. at UCLA.

Think OUTSIDE the box.

How would we go about finding these internships though? Do you have any websites you would recommend for us?

Just talk to advisors at your university. Most of this stuff is somehow funneled through the college anyway.

Trust me: if you look for opportunities, they'll be there.

one person i know who is now at a top med school majored in goverment, another majored in american studies, another majored in psych, another majored in history. you can major in whatever you want as long as you get the pre med requirements
