i hav a dilemma....im stuck between LA n Cal...I really want to go to LA, but Berkeley is the better school overall...the problem is i dunno what i want to major in so i cant pick the school that's better for my major. Plus if i wanted to transfer from LA to Berkeley later it'll be hard and a diploma from Cal would look better and be more known than one from LA...but I really don't think i would like the living style in Cal...AND im admitted for the spring semester so i might not even get a spot....since i havn't signed up yet...but im admitted as undeclared/pre-business for Cal and mathematics/applied science for LA (i totally didnt realize i put that down)....so if i wanted to change my major in LA it'll be difficult right? so frustrated...any advice??

I feel so dumb lol i dont deserve to go to either...

no changing your major from math/applied science to any of the majors in the College of Letters and Sciences will not be difficult at all.

hey, i was in a similar situation too, i had a couple majors in mind, but i really didn't know what i wanted to do (and i still dont). i would say choose the college where you will enjoy life more. both present a plethora of opportunities, and i'm sure you'll find your major eventually at both. so go where you feel is a better fit.

the only thing that it looks like you'd give up by going to UCLA instead of cal is a chance at haas business, but the ucla business economics program is also a good way to get good business internships and jobs too.

You say you don't think you'd like the living style at Cal and that you can't start until the spring anyway? Then I think ucla is the choice. kfc4u is right; pick the school you'd be happier attending.

As for the name difference, thats really not important. Do you really think employers look thru a stack of resumes, hire from the "best" school, then turn to the "next best", and so on? Of course not! Do you think that the better school will "tip" a decision between 2 candidates? That's not the way it works; by the time you've made the short list the company cares about your personal qualities such as enthusiasm, intelligence, etc., not the name on the diploma.

I should add that I really think the spring start is not the greatest idea; when you show up at big U in the fall with the other 5,000 frosh everyone is really open to making friends and outgoing because they don't know anyone either, they're just as lost and worried as you, etc. Half the school year later people have built friendships thru the dorms, their classes, their clubs, etc. Its not that you can't meet people if you start in the spring; its that the window when it was easiest has closed. Something to keep in mind if you don't consider yourself especially gregarious.

Hmmm...that's a hard decision. I noticed that you applied for pre-business at cal...so are you leaning more towards business as a major? While it is true that Haas is a better business school, it is SUPER competitive (not saying that you wouldn't get in ;) ). There's no guarentee that you will get into Haas...so there's a much higher risk. On the other hand, the Cal/Haas name is better...So it's really up to how hard you are willing to work and how important that brand name is for you. Ultimately, it's your choice. Go whereever you are happiest.
