I’m currently a junior in high school and I am so far planning to major in film production or film studies. Also, I will probably end of minoring in business or a similar field. I was wondering if this is a smart choice and if so what colleges should I consider if I want to go into that major?
Usc
LMU - ALL THE WAY!!!
Thanks for your input guys! I have been currently looking at LMU and it looks beautiful plus the film department looks amazing. As for USC it looks like an amazing school the only thing I’m worried about is the extra out-of-state cost that comes with tuition of the school. Would I be able to get possible financial aid for either of the schools?
USC is the same price in state as out of state as it is a private school. They offer certain merit scholarships if you’re qualified
The admission rate to the USC SCA is about 5 percent. Unless your scores are in the top one percentile and/or you have outstanding talent, you’re not getting in. Have you tried Cal State Northridge or Long Beach?
I think that Film Production at USC, like NYU, is a BFA program where admission is heavily based on the portfolio submission, and so scores and grades are meaningless for “chancing” (apart from saying that truly abysmal stats will rule out acceptance). Temple has both Film Studies and Production in a non-portfolio BA program. It’s a solid department, with some great semester-away programs in LA, SF, Venice (Italy), and East Anglia University (UK). Philly has a fairly vibrant film sector, and its Fringe Festival is very exciting. Depending on your finances and stats, Temple could be either a match or a safety. If you need a true academic (although not financial) safety, Columbia College Chicago has open admissions, with no portfolio requirement for freshman admission, and I was extremely impressed by their soundstage and film facilities. I think they offer semesters in LA, also. FSU and UNC-Wilmington also have good film departments.
p.s. You may send me a private message if you have additional questions about Cinema Studies at Temple. My son is in that program.
