MAJOR in finance ?

Every big corporation will have a finance department and will have employees doing corporate finance work. Cultures and work ethics vary from corporation to corporation but generally these are generally lower hours and lower stress than the jobs you mentioned (ie 40 hrs a week; also, see the movie office space).

However, there are a wide range of jobs one can get with a finance degree. Anytime a corporation selects a project to work on (ex: installing a new IT system, creating a new marketing campaign, diversifying into new product lines, aquiring a start-up, etc etc etc) there SHOULD be numbers ($s) proving or disproving the viability of the project. Often times, the work will be performed by multiple parties (ie someone internal to the corporation and parties external such as investors, lenders, ibankers, or other corporations involved in the deal). All of this requires a knowledge of finance.

Also, there are many specialized areas of finance such as investment management, energy finance, and real estate finance which one can go into with a finance degree.

nysteve: Right now, NO, it is not the best time to be a finance major. Analysts from failed banks are flooding the market and competing for jobs in the other industries. Internships are still there but there are less of them.
It's not clear what the future will bring...however it's likely that there will be a recovery and things will be in better shape when you graduate from college. These things tend to run in cycles.
Make sure you like Finance before you commit to it. Maybe take a few courses before you declare your major. Some students sign up for Finance or Accounting, thinking it will get them a job, and then end up hating the coursework. Good luck to you.
