Major in Media, Culture, and Communications

Throughout my years of study, I commonly come across the theme that Communications is a “jock major” (i.e. a major for someone who lacks intelligence and who does not care about school, just partying)…

When I go to college, I want to major in Communications, because I love it and I love the concepts associated with the major. I’m intelligent, but I don’t want people to judge me based on my major. That’s just absurd!

What do you guys think? Do people really view Communications as a “jock major”?

Who cares?

People are always going to judge your choices and what you do. If I had a nickel for every time someone said psychology was “easy,” “useless,” “soft,” or “going to leave you unemployed” I’d be a rich woman. If I had a dime for every time someone asked me if I was “psychoanalyzing them right now” or asked me what kind of therapy I do when i tell them I’m a psychologist…my eyes hurt from rolling them so hard.

Doesn’t matter. I love my field, I love what I do, I’m well-compensated for it. Psychology works well when it’s invisible to other people.

If you love communications and that’s what you want to do, it’s not going to matter if people think you’re a jock because you’re majoring in it. You’ll be too busy slicing and dicing in your own field to pay attention to what people who’s opinions don’t matter to your career trajectory think.
