I'm starting at UW-Seattle in the fall and just registered for classes. I've already met with a few academic advisors and discussed plans of action. So far, we've agreed on the following plan:

B.S. in Neurobiology
Minor in Law, Societies and Justice
Minor in Paleobiology

All of these subjects interest me greatly and since UW follows a quarter system, I'm able to get all of these courses done with only one summer that requires classes. Also, I'm doing a Study Abroad one summer, so that'll get me 15 credits.

I didn't want to mention this in the beginning, so you wouldn't think I'm one of those annoying pre-med kids, but I am. (And yes, I've accounted for the changes post 2015 for the MCAT and am prepared)

My advisors said my diverse and challenging academic plan should set me up nicely for the MCAT and Medical School.

Are the minors necessary? The help your major in very little capacities, not to mention don’t help your chances for med school.

Finding topics interesting doesn’t mean get a minor in it. maybe a class or two, but it shouldn’t detract from the goal. As a prospective doctor, you should try to get internships rather than taking extra classes.

@ninjex Well, at UW, there’s graduation requirements that have majors taking classes in different subject areas. Instead of just taking random classes in these areas, I figured out how to turn all of those classes that I NEED to take into minors. In other words, I’m not doing any “extra” work.

Both of my minors, according to my pre-health advisor, are helpful for medical school. Law, Societies and Justice is essentially a Human Rights major, which gives me a broad understanding of all types of social classes and culture. Paleobiology allows me to focus on evolution and the history of life. (Yes, I could focus on fossils, but the minor is quite broad.)

I’ve already been shadowing a surgeon for six months and volunteering 8 hours per week, so at least I’m getting started in my “extracurriculars” category.
