Major misery, need advice!

Hello everyone, I would like your advice.

I am a sophomore at a large, well-regarded university in California majoring in economics.

However, I just finished up intermediate microeconomics and absolutely hated it. Got a horrible grade, learned almost nothing, and not looking forward to intermediate econ for next semester. Like the very thought of taking another term of intermediate economics makes me anxious.

Recently i've acquired a strong interest in east asian culture and was considering majoring in east asian studies. My parents relentlessly will not approve of any major other than economics and they insist I do not switch.

If I did switch, I'd probably major in east asian studies and minor in mathematics. However, my parents insist I'll be unhappy and poor for the rest of my life.

Please let me hear your thoughts! This determines the classes I take next semester.

If you’re happy majoring in East Asian Culture, then I don’t see a problem. Your parents are aware that majoring in Econ does not always lead a secure career – nothing does, especially if you are doing something you do not enjoy.

My dad was kind of the same with me. He really wanted me to go into engineering or IT, but let’s face it, I wasn’t gifted in that field. I’m pursuing a Communication/Journalism career because I love media and writing. I couldn’t be any happier. My dad can also see me really happy now that I’ve done well my first semester of college. Now, he does not force me to study what I don’t want. After all, it’s about doing well with what you enjoy doing.

Do your parents and yourself a favor: major in what you want. You will do better in it, anyway.
